Was at my LBS today and saw this little Glider bike that I had to get for my Son's 2nd Birthday that is coming up. Now let me say how much my son loves bikes!!!! I mean he really does and its great!!!! When he wakes up in the mornings he is surrounded by cool Tricycle pictures up in his room. One of his first words every morning is "Bike". When he sees someone on a bike he says “Go, Go, Go”. I love watching DH videos with him because of this. He has now had a Tricycle for about 4 months now that he loves to ride on. The funny thing is he will not pedal it. He scoots it around with his feet. So when I first saw this Glider bike on the Web and the one Steve Peats son rides around on I knew I had to get him one. I have been researching these things now for 2 months. They are really big in Europe and have been for years. So when I walked in the shop and saw this one Specialized makes I knew it would be nicer than the one I already found and was going to get him. So I went ahead and bought it for him. He did get to ride it in the Shop for a little while and loved it, but now has to wait 2 months to get it on his birthday. I already want to give it to him, but the wife wants to wait. I really never thought I would ever buy a Specialized, but have to give it to them for making this sweet little bike!!!!

What does it weigh?
Does it come in rootbeer?
Does I9 make wheels that small?
BTW: it looks flexy!

I wonder why they don't include little platforms for the kids to put their feet up onto... Or at least adaptor platforms for when the kids are more comfortable and can start balancing with their feet up off the ground.

Some kid plays around on one outside my LBS and he just puts his feet on the toptube, the bikes are pretty smalll, even for a small kid.

-You don't want to know the weight as it will set the new standard in the Weight Weenie Thread. Maybe 5lbs tops....
-No Rootbeer as my son’s generation will not like Rootbeer as a color option. Only comes in Red and Blue....
-Looking into Red I9s for it now.... Yah Right, would be sick!!!!!
-Not that Flexy, he was Ripping Turns in the Bike Shop like it was on rails.....

When I was in Whistler recently there was a tiny kid on one of those and he was sending it off the 2 steps near the chairlift. He had the rear suspension one though. Funniest thing I'd seen in ages.

That's good to know - I thought Skuut was the only type of glider bike available - more options for my son's 2nd birthday as well!
at $89, the skuut is hard to beat. It's adjustable too. Looks like the special-ed is around $150.

Yeah, looks like a good knockoff of the Skuut or whatever wooden thing that was...nice job, special ed...:shakefist:

Sounds like the kid will be a proper ripper though, up until he turns 13-15 and hates biking just because you encourage it.

as a new dad I've been impatiently waiting to pick up my little girl's first set of wheels. She's just 11 months so it will be a bit before she's able to saddle up though

I've been thinking about getting my 2 yo a regular bike. When I get it home I'll just pull the cranks, chain, etc and basically have the same thing you have. Then when he's a little older I'll just put them back on. Save a bit of $$$ that way.

I don't know if it was Skuut or some other knock-off but there was a guy walking around Sea Otter trying to sell those. He saw my wife and two year old daughter and tried to sell her on one. I was listening from a few feet away watching my son on the pump track. He kept referring to his 4 year old son who was cruising around on one and how good it was for him. He left my wife alone after I said something to the effect that "if it was so good, why can't he ride a regular bike at 4? My son didn't have one and he was dropping stairs on his little 12 inch hot rock at 3 1/2."

Those hot walks are awesome though!! I was going to buy my daughter one but she likes cruising around on her pink Schwinn lowrider trike too much.

fair enough.

how many proprietary parts have you found on it? i'm shocked it doesn't have a 1.5 to 1&1/8th HT, or "spez" brand suspension. perhaps they are using their own unique axle size, or have created a new nut/bolt thread size?

a 2 year old raced the kids DH race at the Wisconsin AMBC this year on one of those bikes. Pretty cool.

I tried to get my son to ride like that when he was 2 by taking the cranks off of his bike. At that time he was able to ride a couple of miles on his fixed gear 8" wheeled bike. He stayed on training wheels until he was 3.5 and wanted a 50cc dirt bike. Mom said he needed to ride his 10" bike with no training wheels before he could get a PW50. He rode a mile that night with no training wheels proving that the training wheels were not necessary. Now he rips on bike at 5 years old. That said, I kind of wish that I had tried the push bike before he ever had a bike with training wheels.

That's awesome.

By the way, you parents should check this out as another alternative to training wheels: http://www.thegyrobike.com/

I've got no stake in the company but I did advise them a bit, back when it was still a student project. It really does work, and it's quite amazing to watch a kid get on a "2-wheeler" for the first time and just pedal away.

Gotten that thing on a scale yet? My daughter's new Strider is 6lbs 10oz, and I was guessing the Spec ones were more...
And if anything, these are more dh specific than any bike with gears...
