I think it's the rider (obviously) but after that I would agree that it's the tyres. They're your only contact patch with the ground, what could be more important?

After tyres I'd go for brakes.

Suspension a distant 4th.

Definitely could be it, I know my best results have been when I've woken up in the dirt still piss drunk.

Other than that, a comfortable cockpit makes much more difference to me than Tires, suspension, frame geometry, etc. It doesn't matter whether it's a shop demo XC bike, my 4x hardtail, my DH rig, etc - as long as I have wide bars and short stem I'm stoked. If I don't, I'm crashing and bitching everywhere.

Read Sunday's NY Times - there's an article that Viagra is now the newest athletic "dope" via increasing 'circulation', so to speak. :brows:
