just a Q to start the day
is the suspension there to make the rider comfortable on the bike?
or is it there for better traction?

It's so we can use phrases such as 'moderate to heavy sucking noises'* while having a serious discussion.

It's a conspiracy. We don't really need it and it is documented that it can cause serious health hazard us in a very small yet proven % of cases. It's just a suspension companies forcing us to use it!

Suspension was invented so we have something to blame when we totally boner up a run and yardsale in front of 20 to 30 people.

"I would have been fine but my rebound was a little fast and I totally got bucked!"

To take the fun out of the sport. (sarcasm)

To regain the fun: build up a rigid ss 29r (with whackado handlebars).:busted:

Funny thing is the the only bike discipline that includes drops to flat on purpose doesn't use any suspension ;)

Serious answer - suspension has three main purposes. First is to keep the wheels on the ground with as little change in normal reaction force as possible in order to maintain grip and traction. Second is to reduce transmission of force and displacement to the vehicle occupants for comfort. Third is to maintain the desired trim (handling/pitch balance) of the vehicle.

The first two objectives are usually somewhat synonymous, but they usually clash with the third one.
