My boss is effing me on my raise...how should I handle?

So my boss who is the most selfish tool I've ever met in my entire life is screwing me on my raise. I'm still getting one but not what I think I deserve. The difference between what I think I should get and what he's recommending for me is only 2.5% but that's 2.5 percent in loss wages for 5 years or so and overtime.

I have the feeling that no matter what I say will affect his decision but at the same time I feel like I just gotta get it off my chest and at least try. Problem also is I risk him mf'ing me behind my back to my new boss at my new station.

Basically I feel like its one last eff u before I move to a new station. The last 6 months have been the most frustrating of my entire life. I can't suffer idiots well so this last half year has been the ultimate test in keeping my mouth shut.

What would my fellow monkey's do?

Tell him you aren't making enough money to live on now and that you are going to have to start looking for a new job.

If he likes you, he should help you out. If not, um... look for a job with better pay?

I always have other jobs lined up. I do not specifically go looking for a job but If I see an opportunity I inquire about it. I have left a couple jobs now by doing exactly what is said above. Say I should be making more(and give examples and proof of why) and have another job willing to pay me what I am worth. If they offer more I stay if not I end the conversation giving my notice. The couple jobs I have done this to within six months have offered to re hire me.

The most important thing is you have to be able to say why you are worth what you are asking. You can't just say you deserve more money. The argument about not enough money to live on is not very good either. Because most the times what it really means is it is not enough to live on the way I want to live, but it is more than enough to live on.

Maybe I should elaborate. I'm a fireman so leaving for a new job isn't an option. In addition I'm a probationary fireman so making waves during this year is a no no.

So come up with why you deserve the extra 2.5%. A boss will always have a hard time arguing against solid facts showing you are worth more.

Thanks for outlining. Your choices are:

A. Suck it up and don't be a jerk. Explain calmly that you are disappointed and spell out why, such as "I have done x, y and z". Don't say "you promised", because in the public sector funding can always go away at any point. Remember that they budgeted for fuel at the beginning of the year when gas was $2.50 a gallon.

B. Tell him you are pissed and demand the raise. Later, as you are cleaning out your locker you can reminisce about the taste of food and other things you will miss because you were just fired.

C. Quit and find a new job. It will be non-firefighting. You will have stood up for your principles and will enjoy the next 6 months of mac and cheese trying to find a job in this economy.

Do some simple math. How much per year is the raise in total dollars? Divide that by 52.

That is the number of months you would have to be out of work before you burned through all of your raise.

In today's economy it's better to take what you can get because as more people are unemployed, they buy less and pay less taxes. And as property values fall the property taxes fall. So cities are going to take in less in taxes this year, meaning that in 2009, they have less to spend. 2009 taxes will be worse so 2010 will mean even less money in the city coffers.

Your boss is probably going to have to let someone go in the next year as budgets get slashed, don't give him any reason to make it you.

Its a raise, you cant be upset about a raise. And if you are you can always lead a life of crime and crap in a bag and let the crap free in his mail box for an unpleasant package when he reaches into his mail box from his car after a hard day of bossing.

in some way, shape or form we're all underpaid. your in year one of a public job. first be happy you have a job. second be happy your getting a raise. there are plenty of people who don't have a job, and plenty more who won't be getting a raise. i'd say suck it up, be thankfull you have a job and are getting a raise. once you've moved to your new station, make sure you keep doing your job and doing it well. maybe your next station mgr will give you a better raise when it's time.

I'll keep this short and sweet - they don't owe you anything. Be happy with what you got and move on. In these are times small / medium company's are taking it hard.

I know it sucks - but if you like your job then take it and move on - if you don't like your job then leave.

It seems as if the peter-princeple applys here...perhaps? You dont want your boss to see you as that guy. You'd better just take the raise.

At least you got a raise, and a JOB. Quit bitching! I have been at my current job for the last ten years and this is the first year we, as in the entire company (it's a large global company) will not be getting a raise. Sure a few complained about it, but I'm just thankful that I have secure employment. It's going to get worse out there before it gets better.

if you like what you do, 2.5% isn't worth potentially getting screwed over in the future, at least that's what I think.

otoh, if you don't care where you end up next, by all means plead your case- but with well thought out words. And again, just be glad you still have a job in these uncertain times- I just lost mine last week.

I would suck it up and keep quiet. Most governments are facing huge shortfalls and you're lucky you're getting a raise, and yes I know all about it because I work for the government. Our city is facing a $5 million shortfall for this year and our state is facing a $145 million shortfall over the next biennium. Times are tight for everyone and I would be thankful for what I had

I was wondering how a welder of dogs gets paid at all, let alone gets a pay rise.

Now we know you're a fireman. I don't know if the fire sector is being affected by the currency like the private businesses, but that could well be a reason.
How much of an increase were you expecting? And how much would you be losing out on per year? I'm not expecting you to answer, obviously, just take into consideration when it comes to risking fking up the job you love. Is it worth it?

Either find a way to give his tooth brush herpes, or find a way to live with it.

Like everyone said, these days just be happy to have any money coming through the door. Furthermore, if you love what you do, which I think you might, then maybe you'll have to get cool with the lack of funds.

I make about $1200 a month teaching snowboarding. I have a Juris Doctorate, and I am a lot happier this way. No money, and I live on soup, but I am happy, and for today my friend, that is enough.

the economy sucks...inflation sucks...# of jobs are shrinking

the only safe plan is to pay off the credit cards and mortgage and secretly look for a different type of work. possibly even work at your lbs on yer days off. In no time you will be too tired to spend all the money you don't have.:bonk:

You think that's bad? I switched groups at my work and my previous manager piped in at the reviews with the senior manager and didn't let my new boss give me a high rating last year (he really likes my work).

This meant a 2% lower raise, but it also meant no promotion to a higher pay grade, 8%. That's more than six thousand dollars a year for me. I stay because my new manager is really cool, I work for a good company and I'll get the promotion this year. My old manager can go EF herself.

Being a firefighter is different though. You work like three days a week with long shifts. I have worked at my local bike shop with someone who actually was a firefighter. He insisted that it was important to supplement his income anyhow...wasn't much good at anything neither selling or fixing bikes but he always tried his best and asked for help when he needed it and went on that way for a long time. The shop was so tickled to have someone who was a hero and who wanted to hustle in the shop they hooked him up large and of course there were the industry discounts you get for being employed in a shop.
