Im looking at colleges in the Olympia area. Evergreen to be exact. Im from the east coast and ride alot of dh and a little freeride. One of the reasons I would be going to college in WA is to ride. I was wondering what the scene is like in the area. Is it really secretive and hard to get into, open legal and looking for riders, or scarce and illegal (heaven forbid)?

....as far as I understand the riding is incredible.

You might take a look into Western Washington University in Bellingham. Thats where I go and its a great school. Add to that the north shore and Whistler are within day-trip distance, among tons of other riding spots close by, and one of the snowiest ski area's in the world is an hour away, you'll probably never wan't to leave :).

ahead of you!!!
legal and not that hard to find poeple to point you in the right direction. if your interested in freeride there is a private place within 20 minutes of the school. there is also a place called capital forest within about 20 minutes also. multi use but there is some good trails to downhill on.

There's really not much in the way of true DHing in the Olympia area. Teaguers is right, B-ham is the place to go.

Just like the other Teague from WA said (what are the chances?), WWU is where the college riding scene is at. However, Evergreen isn't a death sentence for riders. Granted most of your classmates will be more interested in riding the critical mass on their late 70's cafe cruisers than making road trips to Whistler, but there really is good riding around Olympia. Check out: http://www.capitolforest.com/ for details on Evergreen's backyard. That whole areas just minutes drive from Evergreen. You might also check out Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Flagstaff, AZ. Definitely a riding scene there as well.

Western Washington University is the place to go!!! That's where I went, and there is much more of a mountain bike scene. I grew up in Oly, and it is fun b/c of Capitol Forest, but there's much more in Bellingham, and the closer to Whistler, the better! Its a no-brainer to me.
