I checked out Mogwai after you recommended them a couple of months ago and I've practically worn out my copy of "the Hawk is Howling" ever since. They absolutely blow me away.
Yes! My friend bought one of their records (yes on vinyl) and got it on his computer and we've listened to it in my car. It's some amazing stuff.

I'm looking forward to listening to these, hardly heard of any of those bands so I should enjoy it. Because I actually enjoy listening to different music! :imstupid:

Funny, some of that stuff I can't picture you being into, but then again I only know the e-Narlus.

to be honest, i wasn't that sold on _Smile_. the best song on the record is the one which takes up all of side 4, and ~16 minute songs don't tend to work very well for these sorts of compilations :D

Deerhunter's new one is one i haven't listened to all that much, but i did play _Cryptograms_ today, and when i saw them a few months ago they sounded great. i should check it out more.

don't know Lite.

I was referring to Rainbow, not Smile. Smile was kind of a flop IMO. Rainbow might be worth checking out if you don't already have it.

Lite is a math rock sort of outfit. Not my favorite band ever, but their release Phantasia was pretty decent.

cool, i'll check Lite out.

i am a big fan of _Rainbow_, to the extent that i shelled out the most $ ever for that damned boxset...i should have just gotten the regular edition.

i think that it's a problem w/ the rip...i liked the mp3s i 'found' so much i coughed up the $60 for the last copy of the tiny (450 pressing size) reissue i could still find. when i listened to the vinyl, it sounded about a half-step faster.

Destroyer – Blue Flower Blue Flame: Seems like a good song waiting to be covered by someone who is past their creative peak but still marketable. I like it.

Firewater Borneo – Kicks Ass. Reminds of the Stooges, guitar reminds me of Jockey full of Bourbon by Tom Waits. I like it, I like it a lot.

The Hold Steady - Constructive Summer, Bruce Springsteen meets Husker Du?

This jam is on my Youtube Favorites

Endless Boogie - They MUST kick ass live, I like the song.

Minisnap made me want to break out an old Smiths LP. :)

Lights out for Darker Skies is a cool song - (The Repalcements?)

I was big fan of the Modern Lovers in the late 70s - long after the band broke up. Since then, every time I hear of something new by Jonathon Richman, I am hopeful but nothing he has done since then measures up for me. At least this gives me an excuse to post this again...

Roll on Babe is a good song - the singers voice sounds familiar, is he formerly of any other band?

Now on to disk 2. :)

The Drones - The Minotaur - Like nothing I've heard before & I immediately like it. First one to make it to my play list.

Howling Rain seems like a band I need to see live. I like their 60s Haight Asbury vibe - never heard of this band before, my favorite so far.
Rick Rubin cannot be wrong, I'm going to order both their CDs tomorrow.

Destroyer is band i just got into this year, when i got the newest cd sent to me for reviewing. the main guy (dan bejar) also sings w/ New Pornographers.

Firewater Borneo ? Kicks Ass. Reminds of the Stooges, guitar reminds me of Jockey full of Bourbon by Tom Waits. I like it, I like it a lot.
this is a band my buddy got me into...i wish i'd seen them when they played this past year. it's Tod A's project, and sounds much different from his old one (Cop Shoot Cop).

The Hold Steady - Constructive Summer, Bruce Springsteen meets Husker Du?
absolutely. the singing can put people off, but they are a really fun live band.

nice find! malkmus is pretty funny in that vid.

bill geoffrier is the coolest dork ever. love these guys. glad to see them back on stage again.

Endless Boogie - They MUST kick ass live, I like the song.
they were going to play a small club this year, but a power outage killed that...a guy offered up his band's rehearsal space a few blocks down the road, and so an impromptu gig was set up...a handle of Beam, a 30 pack of bud and some guitar amps and the Boogie was ready to go. they played two songs (one of which was a cover of VU's "Sweet Jane") and it took 'em about 70 minutes. they do put the Endless in Boogie. click for more pics.

Minisnap made me want to break out an old Smiths LP. :)
great pop band...this is The Bats w/o frontman Robert Scott.

Lights out for Darker Skies is a cool song - (The Repalcements?)
less garage than the 'Mats, i think. another band i wish i'd seen this year.

another nice youtube find. i agree that Jojo hasn't equalled any of the ML stuff, but he still writes some decent stuff from time to time. saw him early this year and it was a very good performance.

not that i know of, but i think Andy Cabic has lent vocals to some Devendra Banhart songs.

you know the drill

The Drones - The Minotaur - Like nothing I've heard before & I immediately like it. First one to make it to my play list.
they are a rock band unafraid to rock. kinda rare these days, it seems. if you like their haggard take on the blues, also be sure to check out Come (90's boston band).

Howling Rain seems like a band I need to see live. I like their 60s Haight Asbury vibe - never heard of this band before, my favorite so far.

this is Ethan Miller's band, an offshoot from Comets on Fire. he's got that warm SoCal feel down pat.

SM, thanks for your thoughts! enjoy the rest of discs 2 and 3, and i look forward to hearing more of your impressions.

Thanks Narlus, it will be a good switch up from my steady diet of that gangster ish.

I still have that Meg Baird song from the 2007 list, I like to play it when people are all,"quit trying to be so hood". And its just a good song.

The Boston Spaceships – You Satisfy Me = catchy song, not ground breaking but easy to listen to.

Baby Charles – Made me remember Pam Griers long, long legs – great energy that makes my white ass think I can dance.

John Zorn – Mike Oldfield without cocaine, I kept waiting for some sort of payoff but nothing came.

What can you say about REM? I’ve been a fan since Radio Free Europe and Murmur blew me away in the early 80s.

Mudhonney The Lucky Ones opens up like classic Alice Cooper except they actually have talent.

I stopped listening to the radio when I moved to Butte so I have no idea whats going on in the rest of the world - I'm glad I ran across tour post - its probably the only exposure I'll get to anything new any time soon. Much appreciated. :thumb:

On to disk 3!!! (Great way to pass a few hours)

I really like Amanaz’s Khala My Friend, the bass line is very, very familiar. But I can't place it, any hints? I have a feeling the studio version isn’t as good as the live performance.

Crystal Antlers – Ozzy does Gangsta Paradise? Didn’t connect with me but at least I listened to the entire song…

Carbon Whales - My kind off music, totally enjoyable and now on my play list. :) Really reminds me of the Meat Puppets second coming on SST.

The Black Keys So He Wont Break is a good song I've heard many times before - I think it got radio airplay in Seattle earlier this year?

Drive by Truckers - clever lyrics but I can't stand country style nasal twang.

The Son of PM - somesort of Thai GoGo stripper anthem? One can only hope. :)

Flight of the Conchords - genius satire worthy of Family Guy. Awesome.

Not big on Neil Young since the 70s - he's still a legend though.
