I am looking for a new record player. I have been listening to an old player my dad had from college, it bit the dust tonight. I want to find something nice for under $200 :brow:

you can pick up 1200s for around 225 used. They never go bad, so they hold their value well. Otherwise it all depends on what you're using it for. If it's just listening to records, belt drive is fine, and a cheaper case is fine. If you're a real audiophile, you need the heavy base of the technics or other highend table.

If I were you, I'd spend less on the table and more on the cartridge, you'll get better sound out of that.

Go to the SONY outlet at woodbury commons and buy one for $50. Thats where I got mine and it works great, it's 100000x better than my dad's old one I had been using for years.

I have 2 Technics 1200 MKII's I am thinking about selling (PM me!), but using a 1200 for listening to tunes is like playing in the sand box with a front end loader.

All you really need is something with a decent stylus. Direct drive won't matter unless you want to get into turntablism.

Not necessarily. While other tables offer better accoutrements like automatic arms or multi-record setups, the 1200 is so good because it's super heavy base insulates sound and prevents skipping. I've seen several non-DJs using 1200s because the sound is simply better. I'm sure they don't approach true audiophile mind-blowers, but they're among the best even just for listening.

PSP doesn't necessarily need those though. A simple turntable with a great stylus and proper setup is fine for listening, just get the heaviest one you can.

Plus playing with bulldozers is totally rad.

True. If you are going to be shaking your bones you need all stability you can get. I recommend setting them up on cinder blocks.
