Sicklines’ mini DH project has got me thinking I want to sell my 6” travel FR bike to build something lighter. I’ve been looking around now for mini DH frames to set up. I have no brand loyalties I’m just looking for something light, probably with a DHX air, 135 rear spacing, 68/73mm BB, 14” or lower bb, and a 66 or 67 HA. I’m not sure yet on long or short chainstays. Any suggestions, this is my quick list so far.

Commencal Supreme mini dh
Canfield CanCan
Morewood Mbuzi

Intense SS. Mine should be here on Friday.

If you don't care about riding up, the Turner Rail is a super fun, and reasonably light bike that can handle real DH terrain despite it's short travel. The inability to raise the seat is really the only reason I'm selling mine.

Splinter MX. 65* HA, 13" BB, 6" travel, incredible squat characteristics in corners, very "dead" feeling. Put a lockout shock, a scoper post, a dual ring, and a 140-180mm fork, and it'll do everything, and you can truly ride it like a DH bike.

I've seen a few used ones floating around recently.

That or a Highline with a shorter shock.

just some experiences.
owned a commencal mini for a while last year. it's is such a quick bike and only place i felt was lacking was cornering. it does brake jack pretty well. but yeah i loved it.
haven't ridden the can can...but i love every one of their bikes. it's more of a trail bike imo instead of a dh bike but it can def handle dh

Got to play around with the bike Jason from Sicklines has for the project last Tuesday while he was down this way. I have to say the Commencal Supreme mini dh is one little sick bike. I would also think about these frames: Morewood Mbuzi as you already said, Giant Reign X, SXTrail, and the bike I just had the Remedy.

Good luck with you build as if you go with any of those frames you will be doing well.

Cecil

Sounds like a chumba evo!
BTW: When you are 6'4" everything is a mini DH bke! LMAO!!!!!

What is the technical decription of a mini DH? Is it a term we are coining right now and will be for a little while till it takes on its perameters?
From what I can gather, a mini dh bike is a shorter travel frame (in the ball park of 6", more like a trail bike), but with the geometry of a DH frame (low and slack).

If your 6'4", the only bike that's going to fit you in this "mini dh" category is a large sx trail. Nearly 1200mm wheelbase with a 420mm rear end. That's what I call cockpit room.

on paper, a Reign X sounds like what your looking for.

This is exactly the quest I've been on for a while and coming off an IH Sunday, I'll be sure to have a full review as my 08 Reign X1 with a DHX.5 AIR should be here in about a week.

I can't believe how many I forgot, I wrote this after being awake for 40 something hours...I just couldn't remember things for the life of me.

I really love the way the Trek looks and I work for a Trek dealer so that's definitely in the top 5 and it's light to boot.

I'll throw in another idea: the RB Monster EN Low, flick and great craftsmanship (Pretty rare too :clue: )

A bit more DH and less Mini but still a nice 6'-er, and for 09 it'll be lighter, and it fits just about all requirements, but one - it's a 150x12mm rear :)

in a single wide, cooking meth...
At the risk of turning into a complete Mongoose homer (and really, if a bike has my preferred geo and a decent shock, I'll like it), here's my Khyber:

Same HA & BB as the Trek, and can be had for peanuts...Mine came with a Marz Roco Air TST, which has an EFFECTIVE pedal platform, so when you open it all the way up, it's quite plush. Feels very similar to a high forward SP, but w/o a lot of the undesirable (to most) braking issues. With a good fork up front, I'm quite sure most will be just as fast or faster on the Khyber on certain DH courses. As pictured, mine weighs in at 33.4 lbs.

Another good option IMO would be the Corsair Marque - assuming if it ever goes into mass production.

Btw, is it me, or is the bash guard on that Blur 4X busted? Also, that Spesh Big Hit looks pretty damn neat - I just thought they only made the Big Hit SP as a "grom" model.

It may be vein but I have a hard time buying bikes I don't like the look of unless I have ridden them and love them. I work at a Trek dealer so I can get the Remedy 7 cheap.

The bash on the blur isn't busted, it was cut to fit the Saint cranks, they are very wide and have little clearance for bash guards, even the new slimmer ones require modification for most bash guards.

Same here, I thought the Big Hit SP was the grom

The bashguard doesn't require anything nearly that dramatic for clearance - and e13 modded the bashguards shortly after the 1st gen Saint cranks came out to fit with no end-user mods.

idk how it is now but there is the SPEC (single pivot elevated chainstay) and the Grom which is a 24 inch version. i am very happy with the spec and its a super fun bike to play around on. Now has LG1 and holzfellers

I know, especially when people who don't ride ask how many bikes I have and I say "12 or 13 I think, I can never remember" and then they see the DH bike and ask how much it cost, by that time they are just thinking

I see bikes as beautiful functional art and I love having one for each specialized use.
