Don't start with the jokes, yes it's ancient.

It needs a rebuild but I can't get the dam thing apart.

Really strange issue.

Here is what I think happened. While riding the dam for sunk down like it lost all pressure but quite the opposite happened. I thing all the air pressure in the right leg managed to slip past all the seals and into the damping cartridge. With all the pressure in both positive and neg chambers released, top caps off and all bottom retaining bolts removed it will not slide apart. It has a negative air presur insid that prevents it from coming apart. I can put the steerer in a repair stand and literally hang my body from it and it only moved an inch and pops right back when I let go.

Ideals anyone???????????:rant::rant::bonk::bonk::banghead::banghead:

Usually the bottom retaining bolts need a whack with a rubber mallet or the likes before the inner pistons (which those bolts are screwed into) let go from the outers.

Unscrew the retaining bolts just a little bit (so you can see a few millimeters of thread exposed) and give them a hit.

Same goes for most Rock Shox forks.

Nope. Did that. All the usual things needed done for a fork rebuild have been done but the dam thing will not come apart. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

Some how the fork has some negative air pressure inside. You can even hear it fighting you while you hang from the fork and bounce yourself up and down. :bonk::bonk::bonk:

Bummer!

But do you really have an 1998 fork? If you have negative air I mean?

Remember that the valve coming out of the bottom of the fork (1999 model) also need to be smacked in like the retaining bolt on the other side. Be careful not to damage the thread on this if you have that model.

It can also help to depress the negative valvecore while pulling the outers off, have a go.

I think the issue is some how air got into the cartridge inside while it was in the compressed position creating a sort of negative air chamber that has no hop of being released and something else, maybe a bent rod is keeping the lowers from releasing from the rods.
