1968 Rough Stuff ATB by Geoff Apps:

Geoff Apps 1981 29er Prototype:

Rough Stuff ATBs were made as far back as 1953 - see here.

Gary Fisher was a Rough Stuff Fellowship member prior to the Marin scene and he got both the MTB and 29er ideas from the UK where they originated :busted:

Remember the old swing bikes? They had a pin you could pull and it allowed the rear end to swing back and forth. I could ride with my front wheel on the curb and my rear wheel in the gutter. It was the coolest bike ever.

The Machine Shop Teacher in my school is actually making those "swing" bikes out of old crappy road bikes he found somewhere. I never knew those were actual bikes....

Eh, i didn't have fancy stuff like swing bikes or steering wheels, just a playing card in the rear spoke held on the stay with a wooden clothespin.
