My LBS contacted Specialized Canada regarding the magnesium link for the Demo. They said that they are very rare, and that they might be able to get me one in a few months.
Whats the deal with these. I know they are about .5 of a pound lighter then the aluminum link. Is there anybody distributing them in the US?? As long is it is reasonably priced it would be a great way to knock 1/2 a pound of un-sprung weight off the bike.

I mean i have a mag link that came stock on my Demo 8 II but i dont know what to say about it haha. There is definitely a noticeable weight difference between the rear end on my bike and my friends bike (08 Demo 8 I, same as yours). As to where to get them i have no idea. Just call up Specialized and see. And as far as cost goes, i highly doubt that it will be reasonably priced.

You can get them through specialized warranty department in the states. They only drop .3 of a pound though. I think they cost about $200, so not really worth it.

Sounds like your better off getting a Ti spring if you wana spend around that.
I allready have one for my CCDB.
MBA states they drop 1/2 a pound, and we all know MBA is always right. Dropping un-sprung weight makes a big difference in suspension perfromance.
I might give specialized in The US a call. Their people in Canada weren't too helpfull.

Just find a VW engine block and you'll have a campfire going the whole night....seriously.

that's not just a campfire. It'll light up the surrounding several hundred feet like its daytime.

also, didn't they stop using mag engine blocks a few decades ago when they realized how dangerous it was?

I believe the '01 Jetta I had in college had one.
No, it didn't.

Mag blocks haven't been used in the US since the aircooled days of VW.

I had a magnesium XC frame once...it cracked and I was going to torch it with the guys from the shop, but we never got around to it.

Yea, a quick google found that the latest VW used mag engine blocks was the 70's. Although BMW has been using mag engine block housings with Al cylinder inserts in the last few years.
