So I had a little fall a while back and punctured the lowers on my 36Van. Small dent that broke through down low and the oil leaked out. Suprising how such an easy fall resulting in a puncture like that.

Anyhow I was getting ready to order a new lower and thought, why don't I just slap some bondo, super glue, play dough, or something in there to stop the leak and save some cash?

What do you think? Anyone done this? Should I go for the ghetto fix, or just man up and buy some new lowers.

why not both?

Try fixing it, at the very least you'll learn something. Order some lowers in case it doesn't work, and you have the best of both worlds.

"It was a funny angle!"
Take it apart, clean it up really well, including inside the fork.

Then mix up some JB weld and put it on the outside and wait for it to cure.

If the lowers are cleaned up really well there is not reason why this can't be a permanent fix.

Just for reference for folks without a Fox (closed cartridge) that read this: if it's open bath, I wouldn't trust a JB weld repair to hold the peak pressures on bottom-out.

Make sure it doesn't creep inside the lowers much, as the stantion to lower fit is pretty toit.

Clean and scuff up the lower around the hole.

Cut up a beer can and wrap it around the hole, held in place with epoxy.

Is it dented? How far from the bottom of the lowers is the hole? Could effect the stansions movement, if not id say go for it. Youll learn from it regardless.

Small dent. The hole is a little above the caliper mount. I haven't even looked at the fork for a while since I just threw my old fork back on. I'll see what I can do with it this weekend.

When you have it apart, try taking the stansion and compressing it in the side of the lower thats damaged and see if you can get full travel, if you cant I wouldnt even bother with the JB weld idea. If you can I think its worth a shot.

well, worst case you have to replace your lowers and there not as much money as i though they would be. I recently had to replace the lowers on my fox 40 fork and they cost $275.00 from directly from fox. when you purchase the lowers they also come with new axle and pinch bolts but they do not come with stickers! they are another $14.00 I would think the lowers on a fox 36 would be cheaper or the same. hope you can fix your fork in the meantime.

just another note on open bath forks. i'm pretty sure every fork that rockshoxs has made after sram bought them is a closed system. i think pretty much the only manufacture that still uses an open design is marzocchi and that might have changed with their last version of forks
