Ok, so I'm finally getting rid of my tank wheelset and I'm building something that actually makes sense to ride. I'm looking at rims, and have no idea what I can get away with in terms of weight savings. I've been looking at 721s of course, but I'd like to shave a little more weight. Would EN521s be a good choice? I'm using the wheels on my SXT as a DH wheelset. They'll be pedaling around a bit in places like Downieville, but I really want something than can hold up to Whistler and stuff up in Washington, where I'll be going to school in a few months. I'm a smoother rider, but I'll still be putting these things through the ringer. Can anyone offer suggestions? Comparisons?

I like DT 5.1's quite a bit. I run them 3x, 36h, 14/15g spokes, brass nipples on Hope Pro II's and they work quite well.

I personally don't think 521's will hold up top whistler or even WA stuff. 721's will hold up, 5.1's for a while. singletracks will last for a while as well.

What stuff are you planning on riding in WA? Where are you going to school?

Save your old heavy wheels for Whistler and build a nice lighter set for everything else. You will destroy a 521 in a weekend at Whistler.
I just built up a set with the WTB trails. Not too bad for the price. 450g is wicked light too.

me and 2 other other friend have switched from dt and 721 to 521 with really good luck.... I would say they last longer than the 5.1, 6.1 and 721 they replaced.

Thanks for the input gents. bikerpunk, I'm going to UW, I got into the Honors Program there for the Fall semester.

The issue for me is that I already have an XC wheelset with really light Syncros rims and a Pro 2 rear hub. I use those for trail riding, and can really only have one set for everything else. I don't think my roommate will be too stoked if I have 3 separate wheelsets kicking around the dorm.

My current wheels are Profile Racing hubs on Syncros DPS32 rims with straight gauge spokes. They're ridiculously heavy, so while they have held up to everything, the bike feels a little sluggish in all areas. I'm planning on trying to sell them for cash and use that money towards a newer set with Pro 2s, DT Champions and a fairly light rim. I don't want to go too light because coming from NorCal, I'm sure there will be a little bit of a learning curve when it comes to riding ladders, etc. I have ridden all of Whistler and know what's that's about, but the rest of the riding up north is completely foreign to me.

I would also like to be able to convert the wheels to tubeless, ghetto or with Stan's strips. I know that DTs usually do pretty well with this, but with the 5.1s being 500 grams, I worry a little bit about longevity. I know 721s are solid, but would something like the Spank Subrosa Evos be a good choice? I'm just trying to get as many options as possible. Are Stan's Flows stronger than 5.1s?

I know you dont know me from Barak, but if you need a place to put some extra bike stuff while you are here, I am about 2 mile from campus (we own a house and we are not going anywhere anytime soon). Dont have room for another bike (three bikes... and a car, washer, dryer, rolling tool chest, etc,etc all in a single car garage) but if you need a place to store some some spare part/wheel set..that I could do.

FYI, do not ride/lock up any bike worth more than $20 to class. It WILL get stollen by the plethora of scum that inhabit the ave...

What program are you applying/accepted to?

I love my 721s. For NW and whistler, they are great. 5.1s were "cool", until I bent it like a $20 singletrack.

Stans Flows, 721s, or some laser disc FRs. I have been having super good luck with WTB rims lately, the DHs did good all season at N*. Don't get 5.1s there hold up for a little while, but even on my enduro they aren't holding up.

When Mavic changed their number system, the 521 became the 721 btw...

I'd definitely take the 721s over the 521s. Don't have much experience with 5.1s but it seems like reviews are mixed- some people have great luck, some not so much. If you want tubeless, are 823s an option? You might not end up saving any weight in the end, but those are tough rims and the sidewalls won't dent easily at all. I've even put quite a bit of abuse on my 819s without any issues. Raced DS on them, cased jumps, rode trails- never dented them and they still hold air great.

A lot, I think, just depends on how rough you are on wheels/rims. What people can get away with varies a ton. I've been using the same main DH wheelset for two seasons- Rhyno XL on the rear and a Singletrack on the front. People who are lighter and slower than me have said they'd never use either of those because they aren't strong enough. I've never had a problem with either riding and racing at Diablo, Plattekill and other east coast resorts.
