Congrats man!

...damn - I need to start figuring out my travel budget...

...and why is it the bears at Whistler always look so haggard? They look like they just got off a Meth binge or something...

Because they are eating human food.

Congrats Dave, You'll love it, it's the best place in the world. When are you going? I went for 8 days at the tail end of Crankworks last year, it was awesome. Maybe I can trick my wife into going for a few days this year. I went without her last year.

make sure you find D1, it's the sickest trail that no one ever talks about.

i'm going w/ Chun and Jay, we leaving July 10 headed back July 15th, it's a short stay because all three of us have wives and children, so we worked and tweaked our schedules up....

I'll make sure i have about 5 to 7 16gig memory cards for tons of photos and a nice HD camera for footage!

yeah I probably won't even be able to afford to go this year, but if I do it will be late in the season. Unlike Diablo, Whistler continues to build all the way though the season.

We're there from July 22 to the 26th. Good times!
Not as rad as the 21 days I stacked last year, but not living in Seattle anymore has made things complicated.

Ok....this will be my first trip out. And I'm going with two other newbs. Throw out the "have to's". Sounds like there are some successful trips just in this thread. Share the knowledge. We're looking to go for about a week in July.

Bring 12 beers per person. No more, as the border isn't cool with that, no less, as your wallet won't be cool with that. Canadian beer isn't cheap, doesn't pack the slam that a Dog Fish Head 120 will after a day riding.

Stay at the Whistler Inn and Suites. Good prices, you can pack a lot of folk in the rooms, they have a fridge, and most importantly you can keep your bikes in there.

Stop at the grocery store, buy as much BBQ'able food as you can. Cook on the grills, save about $75 per person per day.

Buy the 3 or 5 day pass, it saves you money.

Bring condoms, I don't trust canadian rubbers.

Bring all the extra parts/tires/tubes you think you might need. Things there are rape you in the ass expensive if you need parts.

Bring an extra pair of shoes... I guess my shoes were already getting worn out.. I ripped open the bottom of my shoe crashing on the Canadian Open course during Crankworx...

I ended up getting a new pair of Vans Rowleys for $120 (I get them here for like half that). Also, don't loose stuff like goggles on the way to the car. I payed more than I would here, but it was a nice upgrade from my old Utopias.

Damn good head start. You mentioned customs.....I've never crossed into Canada eh. And we're coming from NC. Fly to somewhere, and drive? Danks mang.
best bet is to fly into Vancouver and take a bus up, there's a number of routes each day. Otherwise you could fly into Seattle and rent a car, but chances are the money you save on your flight you'll spend on the rental car. You don't need a car in Whistler, so I'd bag that option. Also, check out vrbo.com for lodging, there's usually good stuff there.

Canadian customs LOVES me.

1st time through the border in my truck: 3.5 hour pit stop, everything came out of the truck.

2nd time: Two seconds with a Canadian redneck border guard.

3rd time: It was Alan's fault I think. 2 hour pit stop. It sucked.

Lesson learned: Don't leave a holster in your truck, they get suspicious.

You probably should know that Perimeter which was the bus service direct to whistler from the airport went tits up recently so you may not be able to go direct in a bus from the airport.

having said that someone else might have filled the gap but it would be best to check around before you arrive.

Greyhound do run plenty of services up each day as well, it'll cost you $20 one way and a further $10 for a bike but you will need to get a cab from the airport to the depot to take that option.

Oh damn....I need to get my passport too, right? I'll get that started tomorrow. Anyone find out more about the bus situation, post up. Otherwise i'll be haning 100lbs of luggage on my bars riding to Greyhound. Pic opportunity.

I'm heading over on the 7th of June... but I only bought a one way ticket. Will probably stay in Canadihuckistan for about 15 months (2 riding + 1 snow seasons). Should be a fully sick working riding holiday of death.

Any other monkeys who are keen for a beer any time during, um, summer, let us know!

When do the lifts open this year? We're looking into booking our flights at the moment.

Usually the Fitz fires up the third or fourth week of May. Garbanzo won't open up till July (depending on snow pack... maybe a little later)
could be a lot sooner this year with the low snowpack we've gotten this winter. There's a good thread on NSMB about the snow depth in the Garbo zone, someone said you can see some dirt in the trees. I would guess garbo will be open in June this year, but I wouldn't base booking flights/hotels on it.

Nice work on that video.

For first timers, I'll echo the other's sentiments about bringing extra stuff--Whistler eats bikes. Especially important are brake pads, a few really good locks if you can't keep your bike in your room, and flossing every day. Daily flossing greatly reduces your risk of gum disease.

I'm holding out hope for a huge stormy, snowy march, it's been balls so far, f'in Ullr......but yeah, it's thin....years like this tend to get super snowy in march/april though, so who knows what might happen, apparently some systems rolling in on monday, here's hoping, we've had like 40cm of snow since beginning of january, weak.....

i keep hearing these stories of bears being all over like crazy, running into them on the trails and suprising them and what not, seeing multiple bears everyday.... is it that much of a problem? would it be wise to carry some bear mace in the pack or do they usually just get spooked and run away... basically whats the deal with them.... i dont want to be living there and then get mauled by some asshole grizzly my first week there

bears are a fact of life in this town, but they're just black bears and pretty used to people....I wouldn't stress to much....if you're gonna be doing some of the bigger xc rides outside of whistler up past pemby, there are definitely Griz around and spray/bangers wouldn't be a bad call....

When I was there at crankworx last year, I was doing a sweeper run down EZ Does it (which is such a long trail). When I got to somewhere around the start of lower a-line right before the whoops, I saw a black thing to the right of me, like 10-15' away. It was a bear and scared the **** out me because it right there all of a sudden.

Planning a trip to Whisler this year too.

What is the best time to go. Ie condition of trials and amount of riders?

Mmmmmm....good thing I'm only 4 hours away by car...Check Friday night, bail Saturday morning, ride 2 days, return to work completely spent. Learn it, live it, love it.
