OK I need a seriously strong set of cranks, I am leaning towards Profile dirt cranks at the moment. Also has anyone tried Odyssey Twombolts?

The cranks will be used on a DH hardtail frame, I am just about to start racing and I can't afford to just keep replacing cranks at the current rate.

I've bent just about everything, sans the Saints. They are now on all of my bikes.

Assuming you installed them correctly and don't drive over them, I would be impressed if you killed saints. They are big heavy chunks of metal.

Profiles. The most copied crank ever. SAINTS are OK but they are Alum. So say theoretically after 3-4 years riding they decide to fatigue then SNAP. I have see guys off roofs of houses on BMX's running Profiles and good! They are about the same weight as Saints to boot and totally adjustable!

RaceFace Atlas FR set is super strong and light as well. May or may not work for you but that would be my choice with whats out there for the Price. I am not a fan of the old BMX cranks, sorry.

He asks about the strongest cranks available and you post a FR (AM?) crank that's also lightweight?

I'd stick to Tubular Chromo if I were you, but a beefy Alu crankset with a good warranty behind it would be a good second choice. What cranksets have you bent/broken?

yup. there are stronger bmx cranks made but they start to get heavy. profiles are the best compromise between strength and weight for a steel crank. ive been running the same set profile originals on my 20" for about 8 years. I have seen them break and bend but only under the most severe abuse(big ghost ride).
also the ease of drivetrain spacing with them is an added bonus.

I thought Race Face Diablos cranks were the strongest out there and they had a lifetime warranty?

Profile "SS" cranks were the strongest, if they still make them...? The mtb version still uses a 19mm steel spindle, but the arms are made with thicker steel.

Go Saint. I've hit them with many things and they still hold great. Profile are good only if you are not planing to progres with your riding style for the next 2-3years (as saints should hold that long) or if you ride dirt and try out many tricks with crashes onto cranks (which you don't from what you write).

Regular profiles are not very strong. It's an outdated design and they're underbuilt for anyone that is hard on parts. I've bent a number of profile cranks, broken spindles, etc from riding - not crashing. Twombolts, the Fly cranks, Primo Powerbites, Prof SS are all much stronger options for steel cranks.

However, I do think that nothing compares to the strength of a Saint crank. I've been working in shops for going on 8 years now and I have yet to see a catastrophically failed Saint from anything other than a major 40+mph crash/Car accident. Plus they're going to have much better bearing life in the muck than a BMX crank. As far as fatigue goes, I know of quite a few people running Saint cranks still from when they first came out (2004?) that have taken the cranks from broken frame to broken frame and are still running them now.

No suggestions on the Gravity DH cranks with the quad bearing BB?

Damn strongest cranks for the price, especially when you factor in the extra BB strength.

Wow thanks people, didn't expect that many replies. So Saints over Profiles I am surprised to see so many anti Profile posts, I believe the Dirt cranks are a fair bit stronger than the Race cranks, anybody tried?

So far I've had Mk 1 DMR Chieftans, Truvativ Hussies, Shimano Deore, DMR Ex-Type, Race Face Atlas and finally Middleburns, they have all bent and yes I realise some of the ones listed are rubbish.

what about that guy who was machining cranks, and was claiming they were the strongest EVAR??? They looked ridiculous, and the weight was too.

Bro, like I said I am not a fan of BMX Chromo's and they are not always the Strongest. I have broken 2 pair in my BMX days and I am only 170lbs. Never broke a pair of Al DH cranks. I was fully aware of what he wanted, only gave my 2 cents to try to help some.

Sorry if I came across in any way you may not like, just explaining myself. Damn Internet......

Diabolus cranks are the strongest out there. Even other companies will tell you that one.
I know quite a few people that bent diablous last season.
The uk importer just brushed the people off.
Poor Poor service.

They went saints and are still running sweet

Fly cranks stronger than Profile? Hahahahaha, you must not have ever seen the pedal threads snap off the arms then.

You're operating on borrowed time...you're doomed!
Yeah, those B52's built last century will be falling out of the sky any day now, despite the fact they delievered the most tonnage in Iraq of any aircraft these last few years. Despite being built in 1955 "As of April 2008[update], 94 of the original 744 B-52 aircraft were still operational within the U.S. Air Force" (source: Hopper, David. "Upgraded B-52 still on cutting edge". Air Combat Command Public Affairs, 31 March 2008. Retrieved: 21 July 2008. )

Korea, Vietnam, Iraq#1, Iraq#2.

53 yrs and still 'hucking' with the best of them, wish I could say that.

+1, I don't know if they are but they sure do look it, and I don't think they are quite as heavy as their reputation has many believe.

Yeah, and aluminium airplanes never get maintained or have parts exchanged for new ones? Ok, sarkasm aside. Tons of different aluminium out there with different fatigue curves. But "airspace" grade aluminium in cranks and the stuff used on actual airplanes will not be the same thing in the finished product.

As for cranks. Im a heavy guy, i cant say i ride the most often or the hardest out there, but the Profile cranks that came with my Turner DHR hasnt had any problems. going on 7 years now. So i trust them so far.

One I was flying yesterday for 4hrs is from 1969, original fuselage, wings, skin, ailerons, etc. Yeah, stuff has to sometimes be fixed, but that is usually the exception, not the rule. From the beginning, they design them with fatique lifes and limits that won't normally be exceeded. So while your aluminum cranks will fail from fatique, you won't live that long. (unless they are Crank Brother's Cobalt cranks that were glued-together).

You are probably right about military aircraft perhaps, but i know commersial flight has bits replaced pretty often. As a precaution if nothing else.

And yeah, fatigue isnt normally an issue in bike parts either, what kinda scares me is the "snap" when they break, instead of bending and then breaking like steel. Thats partially why im looking to replace my turner with a steel steed.

Anyway, sorry to bring things Off Topic, ill stop now! ;)

Do the Race Face Diabolus cranks have the spline on the drive side? If so why? It is generally the drive side spline that screws up first, Atlas have the interference fit the shaft on the non drive side which I am not a fan of.
Also the Diabolus are not quite as ankle friendly as Saints or BMX cranks.

I have diabolus cranks. They are strong. They won't snap (hunks of metal). My ankles never hit them.

Either new saints, or diabolus cranks. The new saints will be tough, but both of the cranks would be really really hard to snap. It sounds like the choice is yours.

Depends on the aircraft. The new 787 has a blend of 300M UHTS steel, titanium and carbon composites. Aluminum is not uncommon.

I just ordered a set of Profile Dirt cranks, ordered em direct so that way I don't have to deal with two companies if I need warranty, hopefully it will speed up the process.
I realise most people said Saint, but I'd prefer to support the little guy.
