Is it just me or have airline accidents/incidents increased in the past several months? I assume there's an agency tracking this stuff somewhere.

you can't call a trend from just a handful of independent events

Never been safer. Three times I have been in the airport when a plane has crashed somewhere that day. People freak out. But there is no safer time to fly than on the day a plane crashes. The statistical odds are in your favor that there won't be 2 crashes in one day.

Not really. The odds that your plane will still crash, are exactly the same.

And yes, it does seem like there have been a lot of planes/ rockets/ satallites falling out of the air recently.
Didn't we have a rocket crash and a plane crash yesterday?

Ahh, I was a bit freaked by this at first. My mom told me about a Turkish airplane crashing this morning. I just did the Istanbul-Amsterdam flight last month and my g/f flew from Istanbul-Mardin today.

It's because of the peanut recall. People want their ****ing peanuts and revolt when they can't have them.
I had some roasted almonds on my Northwest/ KLM flight through Istanbul-Amsterdam and they were great.

crashed happen in 3s... so I feel so much better now that #3 has happened. Will be a while before the next batch.

and I fly nearly everyday... safer than driving.

By miles traveled, not by hours
Only because every day there are MILLIONS of cars on teh road and only thousands of planes in the air (well 10's of thousands... but still were talking an exponentially larger number of cars)

I've driven in 48 of 50 states and 5 countries - people suck at driving.

Pilots have more training and are controleed by stricter regulations than 99% of the people driving. Plus the aircraft are maintained at a much higher standard than most cars.

I feel safer in a plane than I do anywhere near a road.

I don't know about you, but I feel safest when I'M in control. Not someone driving for me. Not someone piloting for me. If I can control where I'm going, how fast I'm going there, and how I'm going there, I feel the safest.

For the most part - yes.

however I'd be lying if I said I do not make mistakes because I was distracted.

Fair enough, statistically speaking. Didn't mean to say a trend per say.

It just seems to me like every few weeks something's going down... and that seems more frequently than usual. Guess we'll see.

Given the number of times I fly a year (three times in a busy year) and the amount of time it would take to drive instead, I'll gladly roll the dice and take the plane.

I hate every aspect of flying and I have to do it often. Even the one decent aspect of flying internationally has been removed...free drinks! (At least on United) If your like me and want to feed the paranoia here's a statistical web site. http://www.airline-safety-records.com/. However just as someone on this forum pointed out, (along with the FAA, and Gov) you can't use these statstics to predict an event.

In a van.... down by the river
I know statistically I'm safer in a plane, but IF I'm going to die horrifically in a giant ball of fuel and flames, I want it to be my fault.
That would be the response of someone with control "issues"...

I had a college roommate who is now a commercial airline pilot who was scared $hitless riding in a ski gondola. Because he wasn't in control.

I guess I do have some control issues.

Probably because I've seen plenty of things die/explode/break when out of my control.
