Got this off his blog...

This morning Mike informed his doctor that he’s leaving on Friday, plain and simple. We aren’t exactly sure where this came from since no one had discussed a discharge date with him. But, if you know Mike you know that there’s no arguing with him once he’s made up his mind. After going back and forth a couple times, the doctor agreed and set Friday as a tentative discharge date. We’ll just have to wait and see if Mike gets his own way on this one!

Mike has mostly been working on his balance the past couple days. He still gets dizzy easily, and has some blurred vision in his right eye. But, as with everything else, this is getting a little better as time goes by. He was even able to walk up and down a flight of stairs today without holding onto the railing.

Mike is happy to be leaving the hospital for a few hours today on a pass. He is going to go to lunch and a movie with his wife. Mike is still on a soft diet and is only allowed thickened liquids, but he’s still excited to get out and have lunch at one of his favorite places.

Mike was having some trouble understanding why friends and family have been so emotional, and so elated at every bit of progress he has made over the past couple weeks. Since to him, he feels as though these are things he should be able to do with no trouble. His brother sat down with him and explained in a little more detail what had happened to him and just how close he came to losing his life. How we as a family, along with the global BMX family, prayed for him to live not knowing if he would ever wake up. Not knowing if he would ever speak to us again, not knowing if he would ever walk again. It truly has been a miracle, and a gift from God that we have Mike back with us.

Mike is grateful to everyone who has been pulling for him for the past month and a half. He has the will and faith to get better, and there is no doubt in his mind that he will. He said he’s not sure when he will be back on a bike, but the important thing is that he will.

perhaps that may have been some of the motivation behind his reason to leave the hospital.

Either way, this is great progress! Go Mike!!

I hope the benefit jams keep happening... Thinking about doing a trails jam/benefit for Mikey next month at either Sunset or Gunbarrel here in Denver/Boulder. Any locals in the area should PM me to make this happen and lets get him some cash to pay the bills.

Good news for sure. It will be interesting see or hear about him riding again. I wonder if he'll be able to get back to the same level. I know he'll be wearing a helmet... it will be interesting to see if his influence catches on.

^^^ I wear a helmet. Not all the time for street, but then again I'm not doing handrails or big gaps/drops/jumpts/etc. But ALWAYS for park.

good to see he will wear a helmet, i hope his walking and mobility will get better because i am not too sure if he should be riding a bike if he can only walk like that

good for him, glad to see he is doing better and still eager for riding his bike. I just saw a picture on fitbikeco of that bike he built.

I'm going through rehab right now myself - and in order to get myself through it I've started building another bike but the Doctor has said I can't ride for 6 months and even then I have to go slow.

Anyways - This made me cry, serious tears. Some of you guys know how inspiring that is to see him ride again. I'm overcome with happiness.

Guys - wouldn't it be somewhat iconic if Aitken himself produced a line of helmets? Not a rebranded "aitken" edition Pro-tec but an actual line of helmets for bmxers by bmxer's.

Funny, I was just thinking that when seeing the update. It's one item that is borrowed from skate and mtn bike but not made specific to BMX/MTBMX like shoes/soft kneepads and gloves.

Maybe a slimmed out DH style helmet or a skate style lid with more cheek protection - sorta like prok-chop style sideburns. I know it might sound ghey but I think goggles could be nice too. I friggen love them when I'm riding snow. No worries about eyes watering up and with the lens and frame design now you can see everything and they are wiked comfy. Not to mention it's one more item with another colorway sales gimmick.

Awesome to hear he's back on the bike!

It's really weird, he and I have the same style when he's recovering from an almost fatal accident. I mean the same. I guess that says something about my riding ability...

So how would someone present an idea to Aitken about an Aitken helmet line?

Where should I start?
