Hey guys whats goin on? So, I got my first Mountain Bike a little while ago but work and moving has kept me off it for a long time. I used to BMX when i was a kid and now that I'm 24 I wanna get back into it but I'm way too big for BMX frames. I went to the local bike shop and the guy told me to stick with a Hard Tail because I weigh too much for full suspension anyway. I'm a big guy weighing about 270 but very active and athletic (I train in Jiu-jitsu 3 to four times a week so I'm no lazy ass, just built chubby naturally I guess) So my question is what can I do with this Hard Tail? It's a Raleigh Mojave 8.0 with locking front forks. Pretty nice I think for the $470 I spent on it. I really never liked road riding so can I take this thing down hill riding even thought it's a hard tail?

I think what is trying to be said is that your new ride is on the lower end of parts/frame quality and at 270lbs and regular use, you're going to thrash that bike to pieces in no time at all.
That said, 2 wheels is better than none so go out and ride some easy trails at first before you try to take on downhill (i.e. lift assisted or shuttled) trails, and see what you like and dislike about the bike. Or, more likely, see what you break/don't break along the way.
Baby steps.

Well, I hate to tell you but that guy was full of shyte. Ive seen plenty big guys on FS. The 8.0 is definatly the best spec'd of the mojaves but far far from a worthy DH bike. Its more xc than anything else. It'll be fine for mild/smooth gravity assisted single track. Its a decent bike to get you back into riding. Rock it till it breaks and upgrade.

The Mojave 8.0 isnt a bad beginner bike. Like another said, ride it around for awhile on the smooth trails, and if you are getting into it, you can upgrade to a different frame and parts.

As far as the full suspension goes, you are not too heavy for one, you'll just need to get the settings right for your weight.

Good luck!

That's good to hear. There are so many brands and models out there. What would you guys suggest for a good beginner full suspension bike that's a descent price and pretty indestructible?

Hey good to hear someone else is getting into MTB. Don't mind the heckling, its all good spirited.

As far as the shop guy saying you're too heavy for a full suspension bike, complete BS. Granted, you would need a heavier spring on a coil shock, but thats about it. Other than some strong handlebars, cranks, & wheels.

These guys are right too... you would probably start breaking parts sooner than normal if you take your Mojave dh'ing.

Too big for BMX? I call BS on that. I'm 6'1" and I ride bmx.

Yup, all good spirited monkey business :monkey:

JK - you still wear footy PJ's, order the kids meal, and look for dates at the elementary school. face it, there are some things you have just outgrown. just let them go.

I only order the kids meals for the toys. And I wish they made footy pajamas in my size.

And I stopped dating elementary school kids when I moved in with Liz. She said 8th grade or older.

You'll likely kill your wheels quick.

When they die, lace up something quality and you can always swap them over to a decent frame later.
