40lb post! DH/FR Rigs around the 40lb mark! tips, pics, specs

Took the parts from my DHR (posted earlier in this thread) and built up an M6. Just barely under 40lbs.

Hi,

Did you know how to keep the polishing shining, I had finish to polishing my Sunday and there are some oxidation has happen due to I didn't spraying the lacer on the frame?

Did anyone have advice how to previous this issue happen?

Been running a polished socom for a little while with very little oxidation.

The frame must be highly polished first - not just buffed over with some autosol, then give it a really good clean and use some protective polish - i used meguiars.

Still looking nice after 4 months now, has dulled a little but nothing drastic that a rag and some more polish wont solve.

howd you secure the trailer to the rear?
The axle bolts through the hitch bracket, but realisically it was just for the photo. The trailer will never be hitched to that bike, I have a hardtail for pulling the munchkin around.

As my rig sat last season.



This season it's gained a chunk of weight. The new bars are over 400g(200ish gram increase). I wanted the 7005 series bars to save weight but these are what showed up, oh well.
The Hope brakes added a few hundred grams grams.
I'm finally running 26" tubes again.
My pedals gained weight over the MG1's.
The King headset added weight over the Crank Bros.
I did get a lighter Gamut chainring and a Ti spring.

New weight is 38.67
The weight was taken with a Thomson seatpost.

Frame: 2005 Foes Fly medium(larger geo than '06+, '06/'07 gusset added recently). While it was being welded the shock was revlaved and resprung with a ti spring. New bearings throughout.
Fork: 2008 Boxxer World Cup(got in in June/July of '07 so this is really the 3rd season with nothing more than oil changes and Enduro seals. O-rings have held just fine). I spiced it up this time with Silkolene Pro RSF 5wt in the damper, Red Rum in the lowers and Maxima Shock oil about the air piston.
Stem: Sunline Boxxer direct mount
Bars: Kore Torsion cut from 31.5 to 30.5
Grips: Odi Ruffians(3 seasons and tons of life left)
Brakes: Hope 6Pot. They were laying around so I swapped the Juicy Carbons for them.
Seat: Bontrager Race X Lite
Seatpost: Bontrager Race X Lite ACC
Pedals: Cannondale(They were 2 years old when I got them in '05)
Cranks: Bontrager Race Lite SS
Bottom Bracket: FSA Platinum ISIS
Chainring: Gamut Guidering 36t
Chainguide: Gamut 36t
Chain: KMC X10SL
Cassette: Sramano Ultegra990. I didn't want to run the Sram dh cassette to get an 11-26+ combo because the individual steel cogs would eat my aluminum freehub. I took a 12-27 Ultegra cassette and used only the cogs that came on the alloy carrier. I pulled the lower cogs from a PG990 cassette to get my 11T lower cog and the Sram lower cogs are lighter than the Shimano
Derailleur: Sram X0(going on 4 seasons)
Shifter: Sram X0(cut the large paddle down to suit my small thumb)
Wheels: Started out as a stock WTB Laserdisc FR 150 wheelset. I decided to lighten them up by swipping to DT Aerolite spokes and alloy nipples. I believe they came up at like 1900g or something. They are TRASHED, I totaled the front wheel when I wrecked my back/neck earlier this year.
Tires: Maxxis Wetscreams.





The goal is to pickup a Socom/RL9/Sunday/Jedi for late this season/next year to replace the clapped out Foes and get more race oriented geometry.

It is a spine like piece between the swing link mount and the seat tube.. Helps keeps all the stress from the swing link from ripping the pivot out of the hydroform.

cant really see from the pic....its closer to the pivot than..right above the crank?

If you compare this pic to the older side-on picture, you can see a difference in the profile of the bottom of the top tube in the area circled.

Thanks. The RS7 that I posted a while back is owned by the same guy that painted my frame. It's a perfect match to the anodized blue Chris King headset. I was at his shop and lookedthrough some colors and matched it as close to the headset as possible but I knew it wasn't a match. I left the frame with him as well as a blue CK headset spacer for the color. I got the frame back and it was a perfect match.

I am/was a little dissapointed when I got the bike back from Foes though. Apparently I had cracked the downtube at the pivot/bottom bracket(all one machined piece). I knew the upper swing link mount was beginning to crack which is why it went back to Foes. I wish Foes would have called and let me know that the frame was cracked elsewhere, I wouldn't have had any work done on the frame and just hung it on the wall. They didn't even finish the weld on the gusset. I let them know that it didn't wrap all the way around, apparently it will be ok. I've got a friend with the new Fly who's frame also has an incomplete weld, foes said if it cracks they'll replace it. Even at cost my bill was more than $500 and thats a good chunk toward a new frame. Oh well, it's paid for and this is the last season it's going to be used.

Intense Slope Style, large, XO Rear (shorty since pic was shot), DT Swiss 1750 wheels, Nevegal 2.35 wire beed tires, Race Face Diabolous cranks(heavy), Deity bars and stem, Cane Creek XXX flush mount headset, Fox 36 Van 160mm coil sprung fork, Fox DHX5 coil shock (steel spring), 50/50 pedals.

38 lbs. on an analog hanging scale I use for weighing deer. Not the most accurate, but close enough for me. I am surprised when I see these built up at 34 lbs. I know it's doable, but for what I weigh, I don't mind the heavier duty parts.

It's not a case of burliness but sometimes cash spent (and sometimes just good choices). Still it's a sweet rig. Love the looks of that frame. I think a white fox would be more aproperiate though ;)

Yeah, I wanted a white fork but Fox didn't offer the Van in white. I definitely like it though. White fork w/ white wheel might be too much.

Oh, and don't worry, I spent plenty of cash on parts. I already had the Diabolous cranks from the year prior, but everthing else was new for he SS. I know the cranks, tires, and front end could save a lot of weight with different parts, but I like the way it is now. I would rather lose a crap load of weight myself. I'm 250 pounds of twisted steel and...something or other under a protective layer of fleshy meat.

That's what I think too. The black fork balances out the shock/link and cranks. Would look hot if you got Rufus to make you some Fox decals in the same style as the SS.

That's 35.97lbs, (16320g) with 200g added for bolts and misc. I gave you a huge benefit of the doubt on that.

Also that is an insanely big price tag for that build if all parts are brand new or lightly used.

Decent build if you had the cash for that.

It's not that bad for me, I know the distributors that are local to me for some of the parts mentioned and can get them for fairly cheap. I guess I could save some cash(and maybe weight) and go for a Hope ProII/Spank Subrosa wheelset and drop the shock idea and go for a Fox DHX with Ti coil instead, plus I've got a stash of Ti bolts lying around that I could use.
Meh... All this talk is pointless, really... It's just something I have planned, but am not really sure if I still want a full on DH bike, or just get a Totem, run my Wildcard at 6.5" and just be content with a mini DH.

BTW. That socom could easily drop around 1kg if we decide that it wasn't meant for use with 2 shocks and drop either the ccdb ti or the steel spring dhx weight incorporaded in the 4.3kg frame weight. ;)

Take 4.3kg add a 0.7kg ccdb with ti and tell me any1 sane would call socom one of the lightest frames on the market ;) It is 3.25kg w/o shock if I'm not wrong. Sicklines has one weighted as one of their builds.

Thanks, I'll definitely keep you in mind. What I really want is an Intense sticker for my back window but their site is not functional for some reason. What could you do about that?
Shoot me an email, I have a red with full black outline that is made and just sitting in the box. The machine is down for maintenance right now until Wednesday but I can definitely get that out to you. It is about 12" if I remember correctly!
