i can't wait to get both of my white makulu's this week...but here's the scoop. canadian makulu frames sets come with either a ELKA stage 5 or CCDB. The option is there if you wish to have your frame come with a BOS. framesets are running 3999 cdn with shock (BOS was a bit more but not much).

the only problem is that you will have to ship your BOS shock back to france if anything goes wrong. so the ELKA and CCDB would be easier to get serviced.

i have one of each shock so i'm curious to see how different they are and how well they perform. i will post pics when my build is complete.

That is one sweet looking bike. I think the geometry is something like;

Head tube- 65*:disgust1: (too steep)
BB height- 14'' (too high)
bb width (the sad part)-73mm (too narrow):poster_oops:

i'd consider paying 4k for a frame if it was custom spec'd. How hard is it to custom make a frame to order? I mean I know most people don't really know what they want and thats fine. but what if some sam hill fan boy wants to ride a bike with a 57* HT and 12'' bb? lol its not that hard to adjust a frame jig.

at least it has a 1.5'' head tube tho and I like the idea of a longer shock for the same amount of travel. A very clean bike indeed. Can one of you lucky owners take some measurements for us geometry freaks please? :imstupid:

yes...both of mine worked out to be around 3999 cdn each with rear shock (ELKA or CCDB) BOS is a bit more. i was told the USD pricing was the same as well.

After I factor in both builds..each bike hit around $10k. The frame and forks were the killer.

JEEZ, 10 K's!! Nice bike and all, but as Flip said, NO bike should ever cost that much. Wow, I would punch myself after a fall when I see the dent in the downtube...

Downhill is a great sport, but with bikes reaching prices like that, it will never be as popular as XC or even 4x. Cost is just too damn prohibitive.

the small makulu has the following geo;

top tube 22.8"
seat tube 16.30"
chainstay 17.5"
wheelbase 45.6"
head angle 65
seat angle 71
shock length 10.5x3.5
BB is probably just shy of 14"

You miss a couple of things with the geo. The makulu was designed around a bos shock with 40-50% sag (bos suggests for their shocks more sag for most bikes). With 50% sag it sags the same amound as a V10!!! The static geo is 1deg slacker and around 0.5'' lower. That is Looooow.
That is also why I think not getting it with bos and rather with something like elka or ccdb which are shocks which are not designed to run with more than regular sag (I think Socket mentioned about lower stiction in bos that was the key factor in going for the bigger sag) is missing the point and you don't get the full package.
Also 73mm allows you to run XC cranks witch is good for some ppl.

BTW. Sam's Demo if I remember right is around 64deg and 1'' lower than regular demo (13.7'' ?) so fanboys don't have to go the nicolai road :P (They actualy have a bike that's around 13'' with bb.)

Its a 83mm bb.. Its pretty well priced for what you get I think. Paired with the shock from cane creek it really does ride like nothing else. I'm pretty stoked on the work the guys have done.

You are wrong accross the board.
bb is 83mm, my makulu is 13.9mm bb height to be precise and with the 45% sag you get, it ends up being quite low. the headangle is 65 at rest. look at the picture of my bike and tell me it looks too steep.

the +22mm is the difference between bb and drop out in height. the reason why more manufacturers do that is because they are so many variables in a bb height, that any bb height given by a manufacturer will most likely be bull****. For instance tire type, suspension setup, (ie:crown height), tire presure, etc...

Ahaha you dill it'll work better with manitou stances. mark it'll go good off drops for sure !

nicho

my bike weighs 17.9kg. i have been riding it since decemeber and the more i ride it the more i love that thing. It's stabble, pedals like a demon is very stiff. Very well balanced. The large is a handful in tight stuff but i can accomodate. I would recommed running it with a bos shock. That shock has been specifically designed for that frame. What is the point of endless argument over the perfect chassis/shock combination over the ridemonkey board and when a manufacturer drops a frame with a shock made and designed specifically for it, people freak out.
Don't pull the "yeah but a ccdb can be switched over from one bike to another" Yeah well how often do you have frame with 10.5 shock for 8" of travel, you let me know how well it switches over.

Very, very nice but to be fair it does look at least a degree too steep.

^^^^ pic should be illegal! Gonna make a whole lot o people want something they cant afford.
These bikes makes me proud to be South African. I finaly get something to identify with in a sport I love. When I travelled home over xmas I was hoping to pick up a Zuza and represent. I expected the exchange rate would help but the frame still worked out pricey and with 3 kids to travel with I was truggling for space, so saddly I lost out this time. I am amazed how well a South African product is doing in a fairly underground sport, cant say that for many of our exports. Hell our musicians are still eating hand to mouth.

Actually in that photo i had it at the lowest crown setting possible and i have raised it since for a fast open track and it has been good. So yes i can see how you think it s steep. But hey in all seriousnees seeing the amount it amounts up when you get your sag it gets pretty laid out. Bear in mind that the bos shock does not operate like any other shock out there. More sag and the frame was designed for that hence the slightly steeper than your average at rest look.

Yea but they bring up a good point.

A) I'm glad they are man enough to use 83mm bb. real DH requires real DH specific parts. NOT XC stuff. (besides gravity lites aren't much heavier than stylo's) The point is added stability, (obviously.)
B) I had no idea the amount of sag they run

Awesome bike.

The top tube is longer on Rennie's. They were going to be building another custom one for him that was longer (and a slightly higher bb) from what i recall.

i have 3 rear shocks arriving with both framesets. BOS, CCDB and Elka Stage 5. Originally the frames come with BOS. But with the lack of service facilities in canada...i decided on a CCDB and the ELKA was dirt cheap so i thought i would be fun to try one out.

I guess it's nice you have the resources for all this, but why? 2 frames, with 3 shocks apiece?

i had heard that you can run the revox and ccdb ti springs on the Elka Stage 5...but thats just hear say. the elka is 475 usd which isnt alot for a rear shock if it lives up to the hype i have heard.

the worldwide recession has been good to me

i got two frames incase one brakes down...then i have a back up bike. i only have three rear shocks between both frames...not 3 for each lol
