My wife was sick this weekend and I had to take care of our son while she rested up. The weather was beautiful and I was really jones'n to go ride somewhere but you can't really take a two year old anywhere. So what was I to do? Well I got the BMX bike out and rode around in circles in the driveway while my son chased me on his "tri-scuttle" (that's tricycle for those of you who don't speak toddlerese). I practiced 180's and tried learning barspins and set up a 5 gallon bucket to hop over. He was impressed. The highlight of the day was when I sat him side-saddle on the top-tube and we scooted around the driveway while he held onto the bars and steered. He loved it. I guess I have to find him a bike soon.

So that's one reason bmx bikes are cool, they are fun even in the driveway.

I love how a lot of guys say this. Like you're the babysitter? Not saying you don't love hanging with your kid, I'm just of the age where I hear this from other guys a lot. A little social commentary on raising Women never say, "My husbands out riding bikes so I gotta take care of our kid." It seems assumed that when the man is parenting it's referred to as "watching", "taking care", etc.

Don't get pissed, just think it's funny.

I took me and my step dad down once when I was a little guy because my foot got caught between the front wheel and fork while I was sitting on the top tube and steering just like you guys were. We still have a laugh every now and then about it...

Oh no, I'm not pissed. I realized how it sounded, and I didn't exactly mean it that way. Usually on weekends I might get an hour or two by myself. That wasn't an option this weekend because of the flu. My normal role is that my wife has him during the weekdays, and I have him at night (typically so she can ride her bike and get a break). Then I get some time on the weekend or maybe one night a week to play. The rest of the time we do family stuff like ride the rail trails towing the bike trailer.

It is interesting though, and there are definite roles we each play. Daddy is for play time, Momma is for hugging and kissing and snuggly stuff. We didn't really intend for it to be that way, it just worked out like that.
