Leverless Maxle mod for Pike

First off, I do not recommend anyone try this modification. This is an old fork that is out of warranty. I am not worried about any damage I may do to it. Also, Don't do this. Why? Because:

- I am still not sure I am going to keep it this way. At the very least, it makes changing a flat at the trails more of a chore.

- I do not know if it will stay tight.

-It doesn't really do anything better. It is marginally lighter. Not really worth the inconvenience.

-Don't do it! Did I mention that?

First, I removed my Maxle from my Pike. Fully assembled, it looks like this:

I dissasembled my maxle:

I had an old bolt-on rear skewer that seemed identical to the Maxle inner skewer in diameter and length. It looked like it would work:

I assembled the Maxle with the bolt-on skewer and everything appeared to work fine. The problem though, is there is now no way to tighten the maxle into the fork. The lever was used to thread the maxle into the lowers. I disassembled the maxle and installed it empty, without plastic wedges, springs, or the threaded end piece. I re-installed the lever only into the maxle:

Then used it to tighten the maxle like so:

I then reassembled the Maxle while it is iin the fork,, but used the bolt-on skewer. All pieces fit perfectly. I did add a washer under the allen head of the bolt-on skewer. The washer is just a tiny bit smaller than the plasctic cone wedge. This helps prevent the head from damaging the plastic.

Here's how it looks after I tightened it down (not very tight!) No more lever!

Notes:

I would like to fabricate an end piece that fits nice and clean into the area where the lever was. Maybe incorporate a fitting that allows for easier removal. Also, I am not sure how tight to make it. I do not want to damage the soft plastic, but I do not want it to come loose either.

What do you think?

all to get rid of a lever?
Hey, I am not trying to re-invent the wheel here.

I had the parts, looked at them, realized it might work, and changed it. This mod took about 20 minutes or so to do, including taking pictures and posting them. Posting pics actually took more time.

It might be an advantage if you are a street rider and you grind up the lever on a regular basis. Another plus is you could use a locking skewer to prevent wheel theft if you lock your bike outdoors.

That, and it saves a HUGE amount of weight. My double tailwhip 360's to X-up turn downs are dialled now.:busted:

I would not ride it. Nor would I want it. I like the lever. It provides the correct amount of torque needed, it requires no tools and is light as is.

You can call it the Daxle. Dumb-Axle.

Honestly, it's a better way. It saves weight. It's more secure. I think you all are just jealous because you didn't think of it first.

GREAT IDEA!!!!!!!!

Thats an awesome idea!! I have Maxle on my Wotan and it has to be the most worthless retention system ever, its a big gay skewer - its like having a super sized dildo on the front of my bike (i guess some of you are into that kind of thing though). I really like this idea, it looks more secure and much cleaner (MUCH LESS PHALLIC), and lighter. Killer idea!!!

See, I knew someone would see this is a great idea. Especially if you accidently release it when hitting it on trail brush (which happens all the time).

To each their own I guess. I like being able to remove my wheel with no tools. Apparently you like carrying the appropriate allen wrench with you. Enjoy it.

And if it is coming off by riding, then you are not using it correctly. I run the Maxle on 3 bikes and have never had it come loose. Ever. If it is on correctly it should be difficult to open it.

Yeah cornfed, that is such a great idea!!!! Modifying one of the most important areas of your bike with a 2 cent q/r skewer part and VOILA you've solved so many problems that many of us ignorant folks have been dealing with for so long (the ginormous weight of the skewer, play in the hub, girlfriends trying to donkey ride your maxle, etc).

Well, I wouldn't say ginormous, but it is lighter. More secure too since the lever can't frequently vibrate or get snagged ( which really does happen quite a bit). You do like it, right?I can't tell if you really do or you're being sarcastic

Well, I don't know if it is that good, but, hey, the best ideas always happen in small increments. That's what I always say.

I like the idea of creating something of your own. I'll give you props for that. I just don't ever have an issue with the maxle as is. Plus it is something that holds a front wheel on. IMO that is one of the most important things NOT to fvck with.

so many problems that "us ignorant folks" have been dealing with for so long? uhh i have never had any problems with my maxxle before.. and i doubt 95% of maxxle owners do either.. unless they are "ignorant folks." which it sounds like you are.. your hub is probably loose cause your sh!t isn't set up right, and who gets on their bike and says: "maybe i should try to save some weight on this axle, this skewer is just too damn heavy" when in reality it doesn't get much lighter than a quick release hub..

all in all i think this is a cool idea if you don't want your wheel to get stolen or maybe if you do street riding and want more clearance or something like others have said, but the maxxle doesn't have any problems to solve in the first place if you set it up right.. which in that case you are the one with problems to solve. not rockshox. if anything it the maxxle solves problems..

FR4life, I'm sorry my post offended you so much, I should have said "us ignorant folks EXCEPT FR4life" because you're obviously a genius! But wait...............after re-reading my previous posts it appears they are plagued with extreme sarcasm which shouldn't be taken seriously at all!!!!

Hmmmmm.............now this makes me start to question your true intelligence and reasoning skills (ability to differentiate between true statements and sarcasm) - maybe you are in fact ignorant or just plain dumb?

For those of you similar to FR4life (does that mean FatRetard4life?); sorry don't take that serious - I'm trying to be sarcastic, my original posts were in fact plagued with sarcasm and thus can't be taken serious. I honestly don't want to offend you - I'M JUST KIDDING (@ your expense).

Do I think Cornfeds ideas are great? No............but I think its cool that he is trying something different and posting this so others with similar ideas can brainstorm along with him. I can understand why he would want to do this modification - alot of riders don't have the need for a quick release front wheel and would prefer a much cleaner look on the front end of there bike. My main concern was people instantly bashing him when all he was trying to do was provide fresh ideas to people who might want to try something different. He even posted a huge disclaimer of DON'T TRY THIS.

My boy sports a maxle, rides street and FR and doesn't grind or bang up the lever. To do a questionable mod to a serious part of your rig is foolish. The comment on, "we're jealous cuz we didn't think of it first" I'm sure you were being sarcastic.

syadasti seems to have the right idea with the magura axle. I gotta admit tho, if I had that set up I'd still sport the maxle based on the tool-less set up.

Actually I'm wrong - do not buy it. I just remembered Magura forks that offer it have a wedge bolt to fix the axle on the right dropout. It would be unsafe without it.

For years riders bitched about having to carry tools around to remove the front wheel. Finally the Maxle comes along and is bloody fantastic. Now riders complain about the weight of an aluminum lever and snagging the qr on obstacles.

WTF.

If you really want cleaner and lighter - shave the arch off the fork. Seriously, do it.

Yep, pure jealousy. You got us..

I will be very jealous when your wheel falls off and you smash your face on the ground and have massive head injuries.

Here is one. Remove half of your spokes on your wheels. Half the weight brother!! Woooooo...Now I know you didn't think of that. What a tool.

This kids an idiot. this whole thread is rediculous. dumbest idea ever, let me know how expensive the medical bills are once it fails... and I agree with dirtbag... you must suck at using a maxle because there is no way its getting caught up on things an opening unless you somehow get a tree stuck in between your skewer and fork... and with the supposed jealousy claim, you're making yourself sound 3 years old.

and lighter?! by what, 50 grams?! just take a sh!t before you ride next time, it would benefit you much much more.

he's not a kid, he's old enough to be your dad. and you all f ucking missed the point of the thread. it wasn't to do anything crazy, but merely to try an idea out. he wasn't sure if it would even work, he was just doing something new he thought of. christ.

Oh my gosh! Are serious?

Hello Jealousy, meet Dirtbag and A Grove.

Speaking of tools, who really likes to use them anyway? I am not really into posting my inventions to the internet for free, but I blurred the picture just a bit so you can't make out the details.

Ladies and gentlemen (and jealous haters), I bring you my next idea:

QUICK-RELEASE CRANKS!!!!

Now this mod was not as easy. I had to use a rifle-drilled Profile spindle so I could insert a skewer all the way through. I know, I know, It's stupid, etc.

But....For BMX racers, track racers, SS riders, etc, this speeds gear changes. No longer do you have to carry a strange SAE allen wrench when you want to change geaRS. fLIP THE LEVER, PULL OUT THE SKEWER, AND QUICKLY PULL OFF THE CRANK ARMS AS USUAL.Granted, it's a little bit heavier, but the time savings at races for gear changes are remarkable.

What do you think?

Oh, and like before, DON'T DO THIS. This is a prototype designed for serious testing.

Wait 'til you see my next invention. Some will absolutely have to have, and others will be manifesting their jealousy as hateful postings construed with childish vulgarity. It's OK. I'm not mad at you.

Stay tuned! Pics coming soon!!!!

Someones a little upset his invention didn't get accepted as planned
What is THAT supposed to mean?

Granted, I didn't use a very good skewer. It's a prototype. I will use a more high-tech skewer in the future. Maybe a salsa -type or titanium for lighter weight.

Wow another innovative idea. How do you do it? I think you should write a book. Call it "101 Things You Can Do With a Quick Release!"

Crank idea is as awesome. Nothing like doing a table or tail whip, getting your laces caught on the q/r lever and crashing. Goes right in line with the wheel falling off.

You should apply for a US patent on these. Then become a millionare and really make us jealous.:clapping:

You need to calm down kid. First if he's old enough to be our dad he needs to grow up a bit more.

If he's gonna post up some zany idea on the forum than he's opening the floor for criticism. The beginninig most posted a non-flame negative reply with him saying we're jealous cuz we didn't think of it first. That brought on more honesty from everyone else, calling him a friggen idiot and proposing more rediculous mods. The guy's a damn tool and he's continuing the stupid subject with this qr crank joke. I get it that now it's a joke but he's proving that his maturity is equal to a pre teen jackoff.
