Hey guys and gals, it's been a while! I am sure that the majority of you are newer and don't remember me... Anyhow, I think it is time for me to get a new Mountain bike and well, i have been focusing on road for a while. Here's my criteria:

I don't need to spend an exorbitant amount of money on this thing.
Mostly XC but I really REALLY like going fast on the downhills... so no silly xc race bikes
Reasonably light
Shimano components (preferably XT at least)
Full suspension with an efficient suspension design.
26 inch wheels (yeah, non of the 29er stuff for me)
Hydrolic Disc brakes (i'm flexible on the brand)

I know, I know "use the search bar newb" or "there's a million threads like this already" or whatever, now I've said it so you don't have to.

So whats good out there right now, I have been out of the loop for to long and it is time to ride MTB again!

There are many good options out there for that kind of cash, the Giant Trance or Reign are both good choices and come with a nice parts spec for the money. Another good option would be a Specialized Stumpjumper, also great parts for the money, backed with a great warranty from a reputable company. If you want to go boutique style, an Ibis Mojo rides great and could be built with the type of parts you want for around 3g's other than that, I would suggest the Santa Cruz Blur LT2 or Heckler (the heckler won't be nearly as light or pedal as well, but is less to maintain and is alot of fun on the descent) another option is the Intense Tracer but that may be out of your budget plan. The Diamondback Sortie or Mission are good choices as well.
Its really just a matter of what you want out of the bike more than anything, but this should give you an idea of where to start.

Thanks spocompton rider, I really appreciate the feedback!
What do you guys think of the Intense Spider 2 vs the Tracer? I like the slacker angles of the Tracer, but I am really trying to force myself to think about the weight of the bike, pedaling performance and whatnot... So it isn't to much of a beast to get up hills...

Welcome back. I just re-joined the realm of full suspension XC rigs with a Yeti 575. Light build (under 27lbs) and definitely bombs down the hills well.
I have had my eye on that one as well. I rode a 575 and it was a nice bike, though I was riding with nearly 40lbs of camera gear on my back, so it wasn't ideal...
