I have been searching around and I cant seem to figure this out short of taking things apart and looking at them. I have an 04 yeti as-x with a 5th element on it and its way too soft for me. I wanted to upgrade the shock but yeti told me i will need to update the linkage, that costs $250.
I dont really have that kind of money to throw around like, but it would be nice to have my bike set up right. Will other brands of springs fit this shock or am I SOL?

I was able to buy a brand new spring for my 5th not long ago from ebay. I'd check out your shock specs and see what weight spring would be best and check out ebay.

I took a look at ebay again but they dont offer springs in my size that i can find. Does any one happen to have any 5th element springs laying around?

DANG IT! Oh well . Thanks anyway. On the progressive site I found info for a shop that supposedly still services them, but i haven't heard back from them yet. I may just have to pull it and take it to a shop to see if they have anything that will fit.

The important thing to look out for is the shock stroke length, it's the amount that the shaft goes into the shock when fully compressed. Common strokes for the 5th element include 2.5", 2.75", etc....

U can run springs from any manufacturer as long as the coil spring inner diameter and outer diameter fits onto the spring retainers, and the length of the coil allows u to fit it onto the shock with at least 1 full turn of the preload spacer after the coil contacts the retainer.

I'm running a Fox coil spring on my 5th element, had to do a bit of grinding down to fit the spring in as it was slightly too long. Shortening the spring does not change the spring rate which is rated on the side of the spring~

Hope that helps~

Ah. I have a 450lb spring but its for an 8.75 shock. Sorry homeslice.
That spring might be able to fit onto the 8.5" shock as long as the stroke of the spring is equal or more to the stroke of the 8.5" shock and the length of the coil can fit in between the spring retainers~
