I'm really excited that I got my new ex823 rims and tubeless tires in for Massanutten, but after inflating the Maxxis minion to 35psi on the front rim I saw this:

Think It's safe to ride for a weekend? I'm 160lbs when the wind is blowing upwards.

Don't tell me no. :( It was such a pita to put on.

what's it look like inside the tire? if that's a blooming hernia from a cut in the casing threads on the inside, you can boot the tire.

:banghead: Think gorilla-glue brand super duct tape tape will fix it?

I used plastic tire levers and didn't force the tire on. Is it at all possible for me to have done this when mounting it?

Maybe that happened in shipping, or if it was shipped in a bunch, when the tires were cut apart (they come bound with this plastic stuff from most manufacturers).

I've never had to use tire levers personally with 823's and Maxxis UST DHF's. It's best to not use tire levers on UST tires but sometimes they are necessary. Is it possible it was cut during unpackaging (was a knife to cut the packaging?)

If you do use the tire, you most likely won't be able to return it. If you have another tire I would run it as you didn't pay for a defective tire. If you are able to talk to the place you got the tire from perhaps you can get a partial refund? THen you could play with options to fix it (superglue / patches / duct tape)

both the front and rear minions were jammed into a box alongside my rims (kinda folded in half). They had no packaging attached to them when I got them.

I've never ripped a tire before and honestly would be surprised if I could do it with the lever I was using. I also will say that cut has a slash/scrape mark you can't really see in the camera that is about 4" long.. which doesn't make sense for a tire lever to have made since I was using it as a... well.. lever. :) At any rate I'll sort it out with the company.

What I'm more interested in now is how I can repair this if needed. I hear duct tape and I like that, superglue too. But what else can I do.. or what is the best repair?

Thanks for your replies.

that's why we drink it here
Don't put anything on it if you're going to return. Make sure it looks nice and shiny new until you get something from the seller. You don't need to give them any reason to doubt you.

If you were using tubes I'd say just ride it, but that sucker won't hold air long by itself.

I could see it blowing out the sidewall pretty easily - if it came new like that, return it.

The company I bought it from seems ok. In the same order they also sent me 3 empty bottles that were supposed to be full of sealant.. but they resolved that. It was human error on their part.. i bet:

Looks alot like:

in the warehouse. (note: No-tubes is not the company I ordered from)

I shot them an email about these tires already... and of course will only try fixing the tire if it makes sense financially for me.

I still plan to run these tubeless.. and with that said I'm still interested to hear how to repair ust tubeless tires. :)

The only reason I'm trying to repair them as opposed to get something new now is because of time too.

Something similar happened to me before.I tried duct tape, tube patch, glue and none of that really worked for me.

You already have a tubeless rim right ?So Stan solution is your answer. I had a BIG bubble OF STAN coming out of one of my tires on my trail bike. The tire was actually puncture right trough.

The tire kept its pressur for MONTHS!( had to check wevery now and then but still) It all started as a joke and I thought oh well wtf, I'll try it for one day but ended up riding the thing for like 6 months before it started loosing air...If that doesnt do it for the weekend then Im afraid there isnt much you can do about it.

I still think you should get a new tire but the worst thing that can happen is what, a flat?

Ive had front and rear tire BLOWING up up me severals times and it never was bad enough to make me go over the bar or something nasty, I'd say its relatively safe to ride.

Jim, I think stan's is water-based. I'm guessing that duct tape would not stick long submerged in water. I would suggest using some good rubber cement and chunk of old tube as a patch / boot.

That looks like a clean slice from a knife maybe? Like someone who was packaging it or shipping it sliced it.

Send it back under warranty.

The company is sending me a new tire and letting me keep this one. I need this tire by this weekend... and the replacement is not going to be here till some time next week. Would a tubeless tire repair kit work since this is on the sidewall?

I'm thinking staple around the cut (so it doesn't spread open), apply tire glue, then put a patch overtop of it... and perhaps some duct tape/gorilla glue for good luck.

I used a tire patch on Michelin before and it worked.....the cut wasn't that big though.

Should definitely try it though.......tires are $$$$.

Run a tube for the race? Or use a big honken patch.

For something like that I would do the following.

1: Patch it as you would a tube. Use extra glue.
2: Take out the lighter and melt the two together.
3: Smell the burn rubber fumes and pass out.
4: wake up, pump up the tire, and go shred.

You'll thank me later.

Or you could bypass steps 1-4 and just sniff glue.

There is no way I would trust a tire with a cut like that for riding tubeless, let alone riding tubeless through the rocks at Massanutten. If you really need to use that, tire suck it up and put a tube in it

It's cool that the company is sending you a new tire. In the mean time, if you want to use this tire, try a car or truck patch kit. I haven't tried one myself, but a buddy of mine carries one in his camelback and they look beefy and are made to be run tubeless so they should work with your setup...

good luck, let us know what solution you come up with.

I've tried to patch the Maxxis UST tire before, it wasn't all that successful. They use some kind of a coating on the inside of the tire that normal patch glue doesn't stick to. I had to used some liquid rubber with a tire patch, and it seemed to patch it up.

Like someone else said above, just run a tube in it for the weekend.

I came into posession of a used comp32 tubeless so I will use that. It's amazing how difficult it is to put on a used tubeless vs a new tubeless tire. If I didn't have a compressor, I don't think I could have done it.. or at least not with the floor pump I have.

I did try to jerry-rig the minion with a combination of gorilla tape, superglue, tire patch and 20lb fishing line but the side still buldged some.

I can't wait to get down there! :)

I might try throwing a tube in it too.. but I feel like I would be admitting defeat :D

i think duct tape would be fine.

maybe some fiberglass tape(that stingy stuff), then duct tape over the whole patch.
the duct tape is water proof, ao it should stay there even under stans sealant
