I was emailing around a few bicycle manufacturers, asking about frames for oversize tall riders....

Anway Dave Turner replied saying he didnt do XL but then replied with this email:

Everyone here seems to think that would be a good idea to do a few XL DHR’s first quarter of 2010. They will cost more and may or not be in stock when people order them, but for the too tall rider like you that is what we will offer. Tell some friends and spread the word!
I don't know exactly how long the top tube will end up being, Im a bit confused with their "cockpit" sizing they have on their site, anyway Im a new fan of Turner bikes I think.

Huh. I haven't taken note of whether or not Dave is planning any geometry changes on the new version, but I wouldn't want to go any longer than my large '08, and I'm not exactly elf-like at 6'3". I guess it's nice to have options though.

It will be in the range of the 'large' 05-06 DHR with square tubes. Many riders in the 6'1 to 6'2 range are happy with the 0708 large, and back in 05-06 only those over 6'4 fit the large well by 'todays' more compact riding position.

The 2010 protos in use now have slightly different dimensions than the 07-08, but that will NOT stay for 2010 production as I will replicate the 08 sm/med/lrg fit for riders feet to hands. I hope other companies adopt the Reach and Stack dimensioning, as 'top tube' is worthless in comparing different sizes of different brands, even from generation to generation as the seat post tube has changed in relationship to the BB.

Sounds good!
I´m 6´4 and agree 100 % about the fit on the Large 06 DHR. I have my "old" 06 DHR size Large as a spare "fun SS-project bike" and a 2008 Morewood Izimu, and had to use a 70 mm stem in the izimu not to feel too cramped. The 06 DHR is a perfect fit, just feels slightly less nimble due to the long top tube.

Will probably go back to the new 2010 DHR when they are available.

PS DT: is it still possible to turn in a used Turner frame and get a discount of some sort?

That is good news.

On the "freeride" side, Intense is doing a XL version of the new Uzzi VP, with a 25" TT.

With the adjustable dropouts, could make for a good light-duty DH race bike for tall riders, too...

oh gawd.. just dropped boatloads on a new BLT2, and now DT is MAKING me spend like 3000+ more?

And my long harbored intense 'hate' will be squashed by an XL Uzzi?

I was wondering the same thing about the trade in on a new frame. Last I heard it was turn in any old Turner frame and you could get $500 off a new one.

So could someone tell me the best numbers to look at when sizing a frame. What exactly is the reach and stack height? I've been looking at the wheelbase and effective toptube lengths. Are these bad metrics of how a bike will fit? I'm 6'4" and have a XL Revolt on order (sorry Turner). Does anyone know the wheelbase and toptube length of the 06 DHR for comparison? Any help would be appreciated. I don't get new bikes often (as evidenced by my 03 Big Hit). Someone suggested the XL but the numbers seem huge. Sorry if this is considered derailing.

Thanks

The things that determine how your bike handle are primarily wheelbase, head angle and chainstay length (and BB height). If you like the fit/feel of your current bike, comparing the reach and stack will help you duplicate that "on the bike" feel.

With today's geo the wheelbases are getting pretty long, but I think you will find that the reach and/or top tube length really aren't that different, and might even be shorter.
