Totally off topic, but man, I remember being a kid and this was the coolest thing in the world. I'm not sure how something as bad ass as a Multi-million pound spacecraft blasting off into space has become second page news. They've got to get this back on the networks live like the old days!

Anyways, if you are like me in your love of acceleration (and I think that a lot of you probably are), here's the link.

Enjoy!

Got to work with the company that makes the LOX turbo impeller for the space shuttle engine. No bigger than a dinner plate and output over 20,000 HO at 70,000 RPM. Looked similar to a regular turbo impeller but due to the extreme forces the outside was encased. Basically it was hollowed out, hard to explain. Took over a month to machine because the long skinny tooling couldn't handle much force.

That was awesome. 11,000 lbs of fuel/ second per booster. DAMN.

I wish I was on that rocket.

Thanks for the heads up DW, my grandfather was mission control during all missions until the shuttle program so I have been all about the space program since I was about 2.

Yes it was, i remember being in school and everything stopping to watch a launch.

Its even cooler to see in person, especially when someone you know is sitting in the thing.

Watching it land is amazing too. They usually go right over us on the way into Edwards when they land out here. The double sonic boom is pretty sweet to hear.

I grew up in Orlando, and we would watch the shuttle launches from our street. Birthday parties at Kennedy Space Center, etc. I still remember that day in 6th grade when the entire elementary school was out on the playground to watch the Challenger launch...

Better memories though after college of heading over to Cocoa Beach with my now wife to watch a night launch.

I really would have loved to see this launch live, with two shuttles rolled out.

Dave, you are the super dork. But that's also why you're so damn cool.

I was about to say, "Hey, my boss made us watch this...it was pretty sweet".

...and then I realized he started the thread.

It was really cool though...I wish they had like an HD feed or somthing for liftoff. Or maybe I missed it.

Ya, my brother is actually one of the EECOM flight controllers for NASA in Mission Control in Houston :D
Pretty crazy hearing some of the stories he has about work there.

Stream is alright, but it would be better with Rob Warner commentary.
