Before my race runs both last year and this year, I watched the pros and Jr. X's through the upper rock garden, and both times Neko was clearly the fastest guy through there.
Last year figured I would chill at the bottom where it was warmer and didn't want to watch the Pros to see how bad I really suck. Met up with a local rider to my area and he talked me into going up even after I told him how bad he would feel after watching the Pros go through.

We got to the upper rock garden a few minutes before Neko came through. Our jaws dropped and I looked over to him and said "You feel like you suck now?" "Yeap" he said. Then we got stuck freezing our nut sacks for 2 hours until our race run.

I hope Neko continues to progress and becomes a force to reckon with.

They saved the Open cat. for last and some people had cleared out so we really took over then...... haha all in good fun!
What's up with JeremyR's facial expressions whenever he's on the podium?? I need to dig out that pic from Carter's to go along with this one. I think some practicing in front of the mirror is called for. :happydance:

Classic.
I am taking $hit from someone who stayed home this weekend, because there was a 40% chance of rain.:rofl:
Did you get in the front of the mirror and practice saying,
"Nah guys, I am gonna sit this one out, a scattered shower is my darkest hour."

Ha, in all seriousness, I was laughing so hard in that pic, because there was more people on the podium than there was still left at the race venue.
They called up the open class dead last after the other 598 classes.
And in my 14 of years of racing, I have never seen someone so disrespected as the class winner at the prize table. As we were walking up, the prize guy said who won, and Greg said I did, then the guy threw him a kenda tube from 12 feet away, and said and I quote, "Here ya go, thats all you get, next time you should buy a Norba license." Lame.
Ha, Greg drove a 12 hour round trip to get there, paid a $50 entry fee and threw down a time that would have placed him 7th in pro.
I know if the promoter George, who is a top notch dude, would have seen that go down, he would have smacked that cat upside his head with his good arm.
But all in all, this race rules and is ran super well.

I cannot even begin to explain how this mountain broke me this weekend, but all in all it was a great race and well set-up. Looks like the Gravity Easy series may in fact become a series to be reckoned with.

Ha - I definitely deserve that. But at least look good in every podium pic I've ever had (all one of them)!

Sucks for Greg - I know he didn't care but if they didn't want people to race the open class they shouldn't offer it.

Greg threw the tube back to him and said something like you gotta be kidding?
The guy ended up giving him a cheesy pink full face helmet..... hahahaha
We all said the same thing, If you are going to insult someone for racing open.
Then why even have the class, or just don't mention a prize at all.

1 handed typing Please forgive me.

The awards order came from the timing booth. Open was on the last page of course. Long Story Short

Open class was created for bragging rights only. I labeled it as medal only class. I posted the info right here on ride monkey.

I handed Greg the Helment after he shared the podium experience with me.
he fingered the wrong guy. I ran down & spoke with the guy.

It was not meant to dissrupt the open class catagory. Heck, maybe the drama will double the open class entry next year.

Without the open class sandbagging occurs in CAT 2 (sport).
The class was introduced to allow access to the race by CAT 1 & Pros
that chose to race without USAC license on our race date.

good stuff. this is the first time i can recall in 5 years of racing mass that the gap between 1st and 4th place in sport was only 27 seconds. it's usually a blowout between 1st and 3rd. this time, 2nd and 3rd were less than a second apart...seemed like a much more even and competitive race....thanks! :thumb:

We had a great time as always. This is our first race of the season, and some of us, meaning me, we havent even looked at our bikes since last October. I DNFd this year. I crashed 4 times in my race run. Really hard once ringing my bell. So OK now was I seeing things , or during my run, old Guy sport, did I see a freaking turtle hogging my line before the first rock turn? Them a little bit later in front of the radar trap a huge black snake was crossing the road? I almost killed myself bunny hopping over him. Thats the piont where I called it a day.Did anyone else see these? I got passed by a whole pile of guys so you would have to be in the beginner class.

i saw the turtle, little box turtle right in the middle of a turn...right after the first fireroad crossing i think. i remember thinking how odd that was that i had time to dwell on the fact that there was a turtle on the course.

I saw a Leatherback sea turtle in one of the mud holes. I stopped to play with it.

When I went to sign up I got directed to sportsbase.com where I saw four boxes, pro, cat one, cat two, cat three. I selected pro which gave me another option pro, pro open. I signed up for a pro open class for a one day race because I'm not running the series. I felt the way the whole thing went down was bull****, if you're going to have a pro open class it should be treated as a pro open class.

to me open class is "whoever thinks they have what it takes to race and lay down a sick time wins" yea you might have sport riders in it or you might have some of the top 5 pros in there... its kinda like a roll of the dice, you sign up takin chances, almost going into it blind because you have no idea who is racing pro open.

good job greg!

Last year (in open) dude that started in front of me was an absolute beginner - he WALKED the first drop into the rocks. I caught up with him at the first uphill after the long fire road and had to waste a ton of energy getting around him. Dude behind me must've caught him in the middle somewhere and gotten seriously balled up because he straight up wanted to fight after the race.

Good times in open!

The open class is not PRO OPEN.
Bragging rights only. no prizes , medals only
sometimes it takes racing an event year after year to understand
the promoters vision.

SORRY for the confusion on registration.

I have always been available pre event to answer questions.

some folks did not race this year because open was hiding
in the pro registration.
Open cat may have a new name next year.

In my opinion, it sounds like it's not so much the prizes (or lack thereof) that were a problem with the Open class, it was the negative, disrespectful way that it was handled by whoever was handing them out.

There's only a tiny fraction of racers who are actually gunning for a cash or gear prize; it's just a nice bonus when you do put together a great run. The rest of us are doing exactly what you say - racing for fun and bragging rights. Even if all you had to offer was a silly Kenda tube at that point, it would probably be accepted and well-received if there was respect and appreciation involved with the offering of it. Like Jeremy said, all those Open guys paid you $50 and traveled untold distances to attend your event. It seems like a little respect and appreciation from the guy handing out the prizes shouldn't be that hard to muster.

I raced in my obama shirt. Thats why I had to run over that lapper. He told me he voted for McCain, and that he thought Palin was a valuable asset to the GOP.
I wouldn't recommend wearing those shirts while participating in our beloved sport….we don’t need toll booths on our tracks or trails. Enough said.
