I dont know about Rennie but I suspect he is the master of his own demise. He just seems pissed at himself.

It seems to me that for the last two years, every time I have seen him being interviewed post quali's or post race, he has just hated on himself. I think he has this negative mind set going on and its really affecting his results.

This is just my impression of watching the interweb, I am probably wrong but I dont see anyone else on the circuit bagging themselves. People are either sitting on the fence (i.e. modest) or really positive.

Its all in the head.
I've never met the guy nor do I know of him on any level, BUT - based on interviews it does seem that he's a bit negative / hard on himself.

I have no idea what's going on inside his head, but dammit I'd love to see the big guy kick some ass and take first. :)

On Sam's crash:
He landed out in the open, past that drop by about 50m maybe?
...once again proving that on average, Aussies are harder than a coffin nail.

I'm not sure if I want to see this footage... sounds pretty insane.

Stupid time zones.... alarm went off and I woke just in time to see the prize giving. :disgust:

Dirt TV = superb wrap ups... love the look of Sam at the finish - got to say (and I'm no fanboy) that look reminds me of Rocky Balboa as he's about to strike back and knock the other guy's block off... My guess is that next race he's either going to explode and crash out again, or annihilate the other competitors by a ridiculous margin.

Anyway - Well done Steve! To finish first, first you must finish and all that.... and Awesome to see Leov up there too.

Yeah I;ve not seen the footage of Sam's crash yet, but I too noticed that he finished only 5 seconds off the win... ergo the crash can't have been that crazy at all, surely? Or would we have had a 10 second smackdown by him if he'd held it together? :)

don't know if would have been 10 seconds on that track. But from the few people i talked to, word around the pits was that Sam's speed in practice had everyone a bit nervous of what he might do to them on Sunday.

Seriously, I have to believe that if Sam knows his splits are as up as they are on these tech courses...he might think about chilling out a bit for the lower bits.

I think Sam is on a different mission...to teach the world that he is not "fastest today"....but that he is "A FUKCING ALIEN"

The original alien, Nico, seemed to have an uncanny ability to know just how much time he could afford to give up when on a stormer of a run (though before is was against the rules i'm pretty sure he was told what his split times were at some races). Regardless, Nico just seemed to have a sense of how fast he needed to go and how much he needed to push it for a win.

Yep, agreed. So unearthly ability to win consistently has been done...by Nico.

Sam is really good, and will always be remembered as so. But, I don't think he's satisfied with that prospect. He wants to be great. If he actually pulls a few of these 10+ second field stompers... he will be forever great.

I know Nathan Rennie well, as I'm from Brisbane and my son has spent some time with him during the Australian racing season. I think you will find that its not the bike that's causing Nathan problems, but it's his knee. As you might know, he had surgery on his knee late last year and it hasn't seemed to work. Nathan is finding it hard just to peddle at the moment. Hopefully this knee doesn't end his career.

The camera work was not that bad, but it can always improve. Remember guys, we´re in the birthstage of downhilling-tv here. We´re so lucky to be able to see this!
THANKS FREECASTER!!

PS! Hope you´re cameraman is OK.
Not true. I used to watch world cup downhill on the Outdoor Life Network durring the mid to late 90's. That's the reason I got A satellite in the first place. Freecaster is pretty good though.

Sweet ride by 8 year old Josh Bryceland. When the kid gets more muscle than one of Peaty's fingers he'll be mega.

Bummed that freecaster is down again this week. Oh well maybe by tomorrow they will have the whole replay up and the MTB videos going again.

Glad Peaty won.

Sam's split 2 to finish was 32.41 seconds, Steve Peat was 32.13 seconds, Mick Hannah 32.22. That's all I can be bothered working out.

I just found out this video from some dude, it's not high quality but you get the point into what happened to Sam. I will ask my friend for the good video that he got it at 60fps so expect nice slowmo and see when he posts it out.

Jesus sam was shifting over that drop  - A little less speed there and the win was his, hills desire to destroy the opposition and not just win shows through - such an exiting rider to watch, maybe on another day he would have landed that.

Peat is a freaking legend, thats all to be said about him!

Fantastic coverage from all concerned yet again, and thanks for posting up those sam crash videos.

Anybody have any idea how i can view the whole field rather than just top 5 on freecaster?

Rick

It seems Sam is not happy just winning, he has to win by huge margins but its starting to cost him. First at the worlds and now here. A win is a win, whether its by 10 seconds or 1 second. No-one is going to remember who came 31st and Gee wears the rainbow Jersey...

cheers for sharing the footage
(Althought i'm still looking forward for a bit less amateur footage)

Seems the 75/50m mentioned by Transcend are still a bit of an exageration. ;)

Yeah but Sam doesn't know if he's behind or in front remember. It might look like he made a silly choice there, but we have the benefit of split-times and hindsight when we watch the what happened.

from where the drop starts, i wouldn't say that.
Aye, that's a lot longer. I was talking about the part he actually really loses the bike. Freeze that clip shot from the top at about 00:32 and you see him landing frontwheel first but still "manage" and not go otb. Then he crashes hard and the rest is hard to tell from those clips. But true if you're talking about from top he flies quite the distance.

Remember though that Sam and Brendan were scrubbing that drop in practice, I don't think Sam just decided to do something stupid in his race run. We all know how it feels in a race run though and he may have overcooked it coming in due to how insanely fast he was going.

always remember: sometimes you have to slow down to be fast.......

Thats why i was saying, 75m from the drop itself is very believable.
