What shoes do I want?

I finally killed my stockpile of nike sticky bottom things that were like a thomas vanderham pro model or something...

Both my ankles have had more bones broken than not so a good stiff sole is needed. Want something somewhat sticky but not 5.10 sticky.

People seem all over the nike 6.0s but there's like 500 different ones.

Gimme some love.

I'm a big fan of skate shoes on clearance at Ross. $25 Osiris, Duffs, Globe, etc. is hard to beat. But you gotta be lucky to find your size.

Rowley's have a real thin sole so you feel every thing plus they wear out quickly they are only double stiched. DC and Globe have a thicker more comfortable sole and last longer both of them are triple stiched and the soles also hold pins better then the Van's waffle sole.

Orchid? Haven't ridden the newer models, but have pair of hexs from a couple of years ago. Soles are kinda worn for riding, but the uppers are still going strong. Soles are pretty grippy and they have some mid and high top offerings that might help with ankle support.

I've been rockin' the nike air mogan mid for a while now. Very comfortable, with a little bit of ankle support.
The sole is not real stiff, but not soft either.
I have a brand new pair that I bought online that's size 11, but for some reason it fits me like a 10 (too small). If you wear a ten I'll give you a killer deal on them.
They're a bit ugly, which is why they were on closeout. :D

i have a glass ankle (and a glass knee, stomach, back and wrist, but who's counting...). I found that Supra high-tops give me great support and last forever. I bough two pair years back, but I still havent worn out the first pair. I wear them to ride and dig when the weather is dry....

Yup. Orchid is what I wear. Soles are grippy. I'm running Majestics now and have a brand new pair of Cobras ready to go. Both trail friendly brown which hides dirt and doesn't look to fashionable.

Rowley XLTs, now and forever, amen.
this.
or any model by rowley for that matter, never actively rode anything else the last 5 years, and when I did always went back to rowleys afterwards.

btw a pair of Orchids were the worst I ever had: heavy, fat, way to stiff sole for my liking, and my feet started hurting after wearing them for more than five hours and that never occurred to me with any shoe ever.

that ain't bet either, but you'll get dirt between your toes

As I said in another thread, I'm pretty happy with my Nike 6.0 Air Mogans. Previously I've had a pair of Rowleys XLT, and they ended up dismantling my ankles (I'm a big, heavy guy), while the Nikes feel way more stiff, and have a better grip on the pedals. Also, the air chamber gives you an extra cushion when walking. I've bought a new set of 6.0s Air Insugent, but didn't have the chance to try them on the dirt yet, since my bike is in the pit lane, awaiting for a new wheelset and a new fork.

I've been hearing all around bad things about how the nikes are put together. No first hand experience though.

I always seem to get something different. Had good luck with Etnies, DC, Fallen, Vox, a couple others I'm forgetting. Tore right through a set of ES and a couple sets of Vans. My only criteria: cap sole (less likely to delaminate from the top) and no color changes or deep grooves in the sole (those spots always separate first and sit funny on the pedals). IPath always seems to have exactly the sole I want, but the shoes are always so G.D. ugly I never pull the trigger.

I have a pair of vans that just feels wrong on the pedals. Gonna have to replace for this season. The airwalks I had before were great and lasted forever but I wore through the soles.

My only beef with the current flock of shoes is that the offer no real protection. I have bad ankles like kidwoo, and I want a stronger toe box and heel cup for rocky dh. Maybe I should just wear my alpinestars. . .

I plopped down the coin for some of the 5.10 freeride shoes. I didn't like how sticky the impacts are but the shoes were put together extremely well. These are supposed to be less grippy and the construction should be there. I'll be doing some dh riding with these and inevitibly pounding some toes on rocks so I'll report back on how they hold up (and the grip) if anyone cares. Thanks for all the input guys.

no, but it looks like those are more for impact protection than torsion. I've bashed my ankles pretty good but nothing that keeps me off the bike for a month like another sprained ankle. I'm growing a little too used to that sickly pop and the "i've just been injured" feeling in the pit of my stomach. Done the ankle twice on the bike, couple times trail running, once playing basketball and a couple times just doing stupid ****.

I've been using the nike 6.0 air mogan mid-tops for the past 6 months now, they are super awesome! I like them better than the 5.10's and I feel they have a stiffer sole too. The grip pattern under the shoes is actually the best thing ever since sliced bread when put on a pair of pedals. They even provide a bit of ankle protection seeing as they are mid tops. They are kinda expensive though
