I am planning a trip to Wisp Resort for GES #2. I have never been there before. While reading the '09 schedule link I noticed there are two DH races on the schedule. One Saturday and one Sunday with DS scheduled for Saturday as well. Does anyone know what the deal is with two DH races? Just curious. And what is the course like? Similar to Massanutten? And are there other DH/Freeride trails there with lift access? THANKS!

Its the Capital Cup, they do it each year. Two different courses and two different races. Lowest combined time wins! Courses are very straight forward, not too technical at all. But its still biking so they are still a lot of fun :) Oh and a heads up, the lift is SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

Thanks for clearing things up. Three races in three days (DS,DH1,DH2) my legs hurt already. Is the DS course nice? Jumps and berms n stuff?

It's a bit shady, IMO. It's $90 for both DH races, and you pretty much have to do them both if you're interested in points for the series. Sure, you can chose to just do one of the two races for $50, but if you do, you automatically get last place/the slowest time in the other race. The rub is that for GES points, they're using combined times, so like I said, if you're competing for the series you sure as hell better plan to do both races. None of the other GES races that I'm aware of require this of the racers, so it's a little surprising that Wisp gets away with it so easily.

To be clear, I love races where you have the option of two runs down two courses, but this race more or less requires it (at more or less twice the price). Just kind of rubs me the wrong way.

Thats been the format there for some years now.$90 for 2 DH races on different courses and 3 days of riding(they are open Friday for practice) sounds like a good deal to me and the DS course is always one of the best on the east coast.Yea, the lift is slow but the resort is nice with great facilities and lots of other stuff to do for the girlfriend/wife/family.They also have a great deal for rooms at the resort for racers @ $59 nite.
Mike Hartlove always does a great job its a fun weekend!

This is a great event. I've been to pretty much every resort/race that exists over the past 5 years or so. The hill here might be on the small side, but my guys who are usually the first to complain about lame race courses, love this race. Three races in two days is awesome.
Decline Mag suggested last year that the Wisp dual course may have been the best one in the US. I'm not entirely sure about that, but the course is always awesome.
The $90 entry fee is easily offset by everything else being so cheap. The food, lodging and all the other cool things to do make this the event you need to take your family to.

Killer Mountain Coaster
Off Road Buggies
Waterpark for Kyak's and White Water Rafts
Big Beautiful Lake
Personal Watercraft/Ski Boats
Go-Karts
Lots of spectators

In the years past there has been a shortage of North East riders. I hope that changes this year.
If you come, you won't be disappointed.:happydance::banana::happydance:

Guys, don't misinterpret what I'm saying - I agree that $90 for two races is not a bad deal at all, I'm just bummed that if you want to compete for overall GES points, you're kind of strong-armed into doing both races. I haven't seen all the other registration fees yet, but I'm guessing Wisp will easily be the most expensive race to register for, and it sets a precedent that I'm not comfortable with. What if ALL the races started doing this? Paying $90 to register for one race weekend isn't bad (especially with the excellent deals Wisp offers on lodging and the other activities available you point out), but who's to stop the rest of the promoters from concocting schemes to charge us $90 for registration next year? Just seems like a slippery slope to me.

In my opinion, it would be fairer to have just one of the Wisp DH events count towards the GES series and have the other one be an option for those of us with the time, money, and energy to burn on an extra race.

Anyway, I've heard great things about how Wisp/Hartlove put on races (despite the fact that there was no online registration), and I'm looking forward to the weekend.

Here is another question, How does this fit into the 8 out of 12 race points? Does this count a one race or two for the points?
Your combined time for both DH races at Wisp counts as ONE race for the overall series.

I guess that brings up another fair solution: Allow both races to count individually towards the series, and then let the racers decide whether they want to pay for and compete in one or both.

The first year they did it this way at Whitetail...only one of the races counted. But they entered people in both anyway if you only paid for one and were trying to find people at the starting line....so maybe they just decided to simplify.

Wisp is the only race we've done that combines races to tally your total.
They've been doing it like this since they started their series and no other promoters have tried to do it like that so far. I think it works for the Wisp especially well due to the lack or technicality to the race course. Practicing for two days on the same course would get boring. Adding the second course keeps it exciting/challenging. I say try it, and if you don't like it skip it next year. I'm betting that everyone that does go, will go back.
Oh, and I can't speak for this year, but last year they gave away over $10 grands worth of cash and prizes. One of my guys came home with a USA made Sunday frame from the raffle 2 years ago. Not too bad. I'm not suggesting that you should be racing for prizes or money, but all of that stuff costs the promoter.

Thanks for all the positive feedback. I made my reservations at Deep Creek Lake State Park for 5 days so my wife and I can enjoy the surrounding areas. We're bringing our jetskis and the dogs for a long weekend of camping, biking, fishing, and ripping! Its gonna be good! And I agree that two days of practice on one easy course gets old quick. I just hope these two courses are pointed downhill. The DS course sounds sweet! Can't wait to gat there! Tell the boys I said good luck and good job Neko at the Open. It was a stacked field. Im amazed that I qualifyied for AM!

Hang on...so camping at either of the 2 state parks close to Wisp is $25/night?!?? Am I reading that properly? Is there anywhere else I can camp for cheaper? If I cruise up solo I don't particularly want to spend that much $$$ to sleep in a tent.

Its $25/night for me to park my diesel rig/camper/watercraft trailer at an rv site with electric/hookups. I would assume that primitive/tent camping sites are much cheaper. Call the park service at 1-888-432-2267 to find out for sure.

Yeah I just called. It's $25 per night for primitive camping. I could almost find some crap hotel for that.

If anyone is local or knows the area very well, could you PM me? I would like to figure out what other camping options are out there.
