I have two kids; a 4 month old and a 2 year old. The two year old just turned two in March and has pretty much stopped taking her afternoon nap. We'll put her up in her room and she'll sit in her bed and play for an hour and and a half. She's in a good mood and has a hell of a time by herself, but doesn't sleep.

She does however sleep up to 12 hours at night. Last night I put her down at 8 and she slept until 8 this morning.

So my question is for those who have older kids; when did they stop taking their afternoon naps? Did they sleep that much at night at this age?

I can't help you but thanks for letting me know when they stop taking naps.

2-ish sounds about right for dropping the afternoon nap. Sarah slept for about 10-12 hours at that age. 'Course all kids are different and only you and the spouse can be the judge of whether or not the kid is getting enough rest. That said, seems perfectly normal to me.

Yeah, I'm not so much worried about it, just curious. My 4 year old nephew still takes an afternoon nap.

I'll tell ya' having 2 hours in the afternoon to no be chasing a 2 year old around goes a long way for one's mental health, well I should say my wife's mental health!

I'm green in this area but could it be the 12hr nights compensating for the naps?

Yeah, at least it's helping. But by about 5 in the evening she get's to be tough, very clingy/whiney/not-herself so I can't say that it's compensating completely.

Our twins(3) still take a nap most days...We'll see how that works out this summer with the other two running around.

The oldest stopped about 5, and the other one around 4.

Mad Dog stopped around 2 yrs if I recall. She sleeps about 11 hours at night and has for a while.

I like a nap around 2:00.

With my 18 month old, afternoon naps are hit or miss. She will sleep 10 - 12 hours at night though.

Mom really misses those afternoon naps as it was the only time she could count on getting anything done. We don't call the rugrat Princess Troubles for nothing

My first post, and it's about kids...

Anyway. Alex is 18 months old, and has a 1 to 2-hour snooze at the end of the morning, and no sleep in the afternoon unless he's really active and bushed by 3.

Drag him through the bath at 7-ish, and in bed before 8. This way I get to see him in the evenings!

Mine's 2.5 years old. Still naps from 1pm to 3pm sometimes longer, sometimes less. Acts like a real ass if he doesn't get a nap. Sleeps around 10 hr / night.

Everyone noticed, my boss was behind me and chewed my ass for it later. What are they going to do, fire me? You try staying awake while listening to the CEO of Intel talk about high level business concerns that you could give two sh!ts about. :D

Sounds like Syd. She's hit or miss for naps these days. When she get really whiny/grumpy/clingy, it's time to snuggle with a book and we go to bed a little earlier than usual. She turned 3 in February and will only "rest her body" (we don't say nap) for about a half hour if she doesn't fall asleep and she sleeps 10-12 hours per night.

Is your boss a chick??? I wouldn't let anyone chew on my ass while I jerked during a nap, but a nice subtle lick might be ok. :clue:

My boy is about 2.5 years old, and it's pretty much hit or miss with him on naps. IF he doesn't get a nap, it's a tough evening.....real irritable and combative. Lately, he's been sleeping a lot later in the mornings, which is nice. Those 5am wake up calls got annoying for awhile. Every kid is different, so I wouldn't sweat it....try and keep them on the same routine as much as possible and hang in there.

When they're 13 and acting like a real ass, you're gonna want these days back.

Yeah, she gets tough at night without a nap sometimes, but she's a really good girl (ok, I'm biased... but). She just needs a little extra attention.

I would take this over getting up at 5 am every morning. She sleeps until after 7am 90% of the time. The 4 month old has finally started to sleep through the night also, so it almost feels like we're getting a life back.

And 13? No, if I had my way she would never grow up! Well, I don't mean that, but she's in this really cute phase right now where she runs around kissing everything. She goes from giving Mama a kiss and hug and then she'll kiss her teddy bear, then the table, then the couch, then the cat (who just gets pissed off) etc etc etc. Damn she's cute.

I loved the hugs & kisses stage. She's in the "I'm the mommy and I'm gonna take care of you" phase right now. She actually searched the fridge for my favorite beer the other night--a hibernater--'cause it has a teddy bear reading on it. I like them, but I wouldn't call it my favorite...then again, I didn't turn it down either :busted:

vtjim -- does she get outside in the morning? I've found that some hard play outside before lunch tires her out enough to relax with a CD and some books in the afternoon and that's usually when she'll fall asleep.

Yeah she's outside a lot. My wife would rather be outside than inside on any given day. Plus we have a fenced in back yard so she can just run around and do her own thing (supervised of course). She'll look tired out but then just won't actually sleep when she goes down for her nap.

I guess she's just loosing it, but I like I said I would rather that then she go to bed late and get up early.

Heh, she's in beer fetching training. At the moment my wife will get it out of the fridge and give it to her, then she'll bring it over to me. "Dada's beea, mmm beea"

Yeah, we have a similar philosophy. Syd knows that she needs to rest her body for atleast 30 minutes (I set the timer for her, but turn it off if she falls asleep) so she'll lay in bed and look at books and listen to a Classical CD...maybe she'll sleep and maybe not, but when she doesn't she can be handful in the evening.

We have a daughter that will be 2 in July. Naps for her have been very infrequent the last couple of months and she seems to do Ok without them. She does sleep a lot at night, I'm talking 7pm - 8am, sometimes as late as 8:45. So I think she's getting enough sleep, though that 'free time' in the afternoon was nice (for me on the weekends, for my wife everyday).
We also have a 2 1/2 month old who has been sleeping 5-6 hr stretches at night for the last week - awesome for my wife.
