that saddle keeps the snow FOREVER! Does anyone just go up the trail for their early season rides up there? If so, how is it?

Bring your snow shoes. I was in the high country last Friday all shady spots are holding a lot of snow still. 2-3 weeks maybe. If you think your tough try riding the entire loop. I learned my lesson, shuttle good.

That's pretty funny. I've seen many a less than 100 pound gals ride that whole loop and still have plenty of energy left. It's an easy morning lap.

Hehehe. IF one had to ask. I guess the hardest days were the Cascade Triple Crown. Riding up then down Crystal, Dalles/Palisades, and Sun Top all in one day. Maybe 45 miles and 14K of climbing. Or day two of the BBFT at 83 miles and 7800 feet of climbing. Good enough?

I just didn't want to come right out and say shuttling Kachess is lame.

Jesus, you are crazy! If you don't like to shuttle it, I have this new thing that will benefit both of us.. It's a rope tied to your seatpost and my bars. You get the best workout possible for such a short trail like Kachess, and I get to enjoy cold beer while being towed to the top! WIN, WIN!

Kachesse road climb isn't really that bad. i'm not a purist like BB, but if you are not completely out of shape you could stay lightfooted on granny and dig your way up no prob.

Logistics on shuttles can be a pain sometimes, driving up and down forest roads, it takes more time than just riding a loop most times. If you have any cardio at all it's not worth a shuttle, if you can't make it up Tokul East once without puking maybe you should stick with a shuttle.

Big difference between a purist and a trail rider in that Borneo would laugh at the offer of someone passing him on the way up to offer a shuttle ride, while i would be ALL over it.

I remember the loop being a long grunt up the road. I hear going up the trail instead of the road is the way to go. I'm cool with either shuttling or riding. My 40lb "trailbike" would not be ideal up that climb. Bob, you still riding the covert? Got a spin on the new one up at Galby with EB. Nice bike from the Transition guys.

Yep. It's a real quiver of one. Swap the 2.5 tire wheels to the 28 spoke light ones and it goes from a Shore/Galby bike to a long, all day backoutnry epic bike. Is the new one any different? Kevin said they'd take my feedback into consideration when we talked at BENT because they were thinking pretty much the same stuff.

Trust me, up the trail sucks. But, this isn't on my favorite list at all anyways partially for the way too much road part. But, that's another thread.

Back on thread, it will probably be quite a while yet until the snow melts out enough to get up there. Via any method, with a bikey.

To be honest I really was more interested in the Hammershmidt setup than anything. It seems cool but not for that amount of cash. Anyways, the bike looks pretty cool. It does seem a bit on the spindly side with really narrow tubing but I watched Matt put it to the test at Galby and it seemed to handle it. I think they were saying it is lighter than the previous Covert but that's all I know. Aesthetically, I can honestly say it's the first Transition bike that actually looks good IMO.

I was up there friday as well. I would encourage anybody thinking about riding it to wait just another week or so. Mainly because the meadows sections are very WET... like not rideable unless you ride off trail... doing so is going to going to trash those meadow areas big time. There are also 5-6 fairly deep snowpack areas you need to hike through on the saddle, instead of the usual 1 or 2.

Basically..... it's like a hot 15yr old right now. Looking good, but consider giving it just a little more time before you hit it.

Awesome:weee:

Yeah, I tried to stay as close to the trail as possible in the wetland area, you could tell a few people have ridden around it already.

Rode the trail last Friday... still some snow on the hike-a-bike up to the saddle and a few spots after that. Trail is probably 90% ridable, some trees down too. Sure was a warm ascent, about 90 degrees, but the snow and creek crossings paid off.

Ahh Chris, I understand you ride periodically with Iddings (off topic, I know). I clicked through your blog on Kachess, long ride to do by yourself if I recall correctly!
