Anyone know of a good, secure MTB shoe where the toe area is a bit more flexible, allowing non awkward walking.

I use to own some older TIME shoes that were like this and they were great even though they were bright orange and butt ugly. The Shimanos that I have now are really fancy and ultra stiff but the stiffness extends all the way to the toes so if I do need to step off the bike it makes it really awkward and uncomfortable to walk at all.

I've never had a problem walking in MTB shoes. My specialized shoes do not flex but the tread is rounded so the shoe rolls and makes walking comfortable.

My recommendation would be to go down to your local LBS and....oh yeah...never mind.

Golgia - I've had good luck with Cannondale brand shoes as well as Shimano. I currently have a pair of Shimano MT31 shoes that are very comfortable, reasonably stiff, but very comfortable to walk in. Before that I had a comparable pair of shoes by Cannondale (forget the model) that were just as comfy.

JIM: Every pair of my cycling shoes have been purchased locally. Shoes are something you have to try on, you know?

WESTY: I have owned some spec shoes in the past... they did kind of roll like you describe which was good but not as good as my old TIMEs. The ball of the foot to the heel was stiff, but in front of the ball it was like a normal shoe, it was genius. Surely there's a shoe out there that is like this.

My Shimano M181s suck for walking. They are like walking in road shoes. I had to hike up a washed out section yesterday and I felts like I was some sort of cripple.

Front Range, dude...
I have 3 y/o Adidas Durangos. Not super stiff, with a nice tractiony sole with the toe cleats. Couple that with the cheap a$$ price I paid for them and I dig 'em.

Oh yeah, they are flexy enough to walk fairly comfortably in too.

I can't think of any know, but I did have some Italian made Nike Liguires that were gold for that. I still have them somewhere, but can't recall. I guess I should ride my road bike less.

Currently my favorites are the SHimano

If you want Budget Oriented Mt-41g
This is what I currently have, they are very comfy, alot of room in the toe box, and they are great when walking around. Great traction when in need of a hike, and they take a beating.

If you want costly, and custom

MT-230C

Heat moldable to your foot, But I think the tread would give you the same complaint you have now

Pearl Izumi has a series that are easier to walk in.. I think the series is called X alp.. They have lace up, Velcro and a mid top I believe.
Yes, that's what I currently use. The only downside is that the seem a bit narrow in the toe (for my feet). Otherwise I have no complaints.

I have some Lake MX190 that I love for any hike-a-bike sections. Full vibram sole and I haven't noticed any flexibility issues. They definitely aren't weight weenie shoes though.

The MX165 have three velcro straps for the buckle haters. I haven't had any problems with the buckle.

Use the shoes the LBS owners want to put up your ass. I bet they are plenty flexible in the toe box.
