What Fabien achieved today was just simply amazing... Super stoked for him, he made me the happiest person in the earth..

I don't think anyone can realize how much effort he put and motivation on his knee recovery, what he does when things get wrong it's just admirable... He's the man... 2 world cups on the new bike and 1 win on the hardest track for bikes we have raced this year so far with a ****ed knee that any of us will think on even walk some stairs down...

Everyone talks about sams runs, but he pulled 3 seconds out of him on the roughest, fastest, rootiest part of the track,...

Amazing, rider, amazing person, was long time since i droped some tears but today, watching him after his amazing run, on top spot was the perfect day to have some droping...

Congratulations on him, on Damien amazing perform here on first race on new bike and congrats to Paul on his part getting the dialed in...

We go to celebrate now, if you can drink a beer for Fabien! I will!

As Fabien says though, he was aiming for a top-10. He rode conservatively and it paid off. Gee rode ragged, and it didn't!

I am so happy for Fabien, this win was a long time coming for him, from when he crashed in Maribor in 2007 I think it was, the speed he was going at then on his Kona, to winning in Maribor today with a busted knee, he is a living legend! Congratulations Fabien.

after watching the top 5 interviews with the men, it's funny how everyone says how bad their runs were. wouldn't you be a little pissed off if you were one of the guys not on the podium with a great run for yourself, to hear the top guys always saying they did well but made a lot of mistakes and had a really bad run, or crashed everywhere, and were surprised they placed how they did? It almost seems like taunting, or maybe just mental tactics against the other top riders.

does that play in your head if someone beats you and they say they had a bad run or a crash? It might be worth the mental edge to always say you had a bad run if that's the case, no matter how well you do.

But what if that knowledge inspires the other riders to train harder, become more focused?

I could see it going both ways.

theres a lot of **** talked after the racing is finished.riders have perfect runs and say they made mistakes, just to make other riders think that they will get smoked at the next race.racing is one big mind game.just watch the ''MTB'' movie ''The Tipping Point'' haha...

Cesar - Agreed!

Fabian's talent as a rider seems boundless at times. Unreal. After seeing him demonstrate the damage to his knee by pulling the joint apart and moving it around on that DIRT TV vid I thought for sure he was done for the rest of the season. Unreal.

Congrats to Fabian! A well-earned win!

Congrats to Steve and Matti for 2 Top 10 finishes!

A throughly enjoyable race. That FB can make a come back like that just shows how dedicated and talented he is. When I saw him limping after Gee had finished I just thought: 'wow - thats one hard MF'. Such a gentleman while he is at it. He show's total respect to the other racers and the media, not like Pedemenaud - flicking the bird once he finished - WTF?

Commentary earlier during the race mentioned he was kicked off Morewood for 'unprofessional behaviour'. No s**t sherlock.

We want out sport to be recognized, respected but at the same time present a bad ass image - it aint going to work like that. Most of the young guns have got professionalism down. Fabian # 2 needs to learn some. Rant over.

Leov and Brendog - Hell Yeah!!!

It was an amazing race, I have more respect for both Sam Hill and Fabien Barel after watching it. It shows a lot of class when Sam Hill removed his cap when the French anthem was playing while the rest kept theirs on and some were even talking during the anthem. How Fabien cheered others on as they came through the finish line, how he limped over to shake hands. These are some of the classier guys on the circuit.

There was some smack talk last year about Sam and him having a lack of respect. That gesture by him on that podium hopefully clears that up.:pleasantry:

Off topic - these next gen smilies are going to be fun. :jester:

Not only is Fabien a class act, he's as passionate about the sport and as knowledgeable about his bike setup as anyone you'll ever meet. I had the privilege of meeting with him and his team manager at Interbike a few years ago, and I was really floored by his professionalism and in-depth knowledge of the componentry on his bike. We talked for a good half hour about his chainguide setup, and he demonstrated a comprehension and expertise . . . all in a foreign language! . . . that I had rarely witnessed from experienced mechanics on the circuit.

Super happy for him and floored by his gutsy performance today. A lot of the up-and-coming racers could learn a lot from him!

I'm so stoked for Fabien Barel. I've really been a fan of this guy for years since he seems to be such a total class act, especially after there have been so many people who have ripped on his ability to only focus on the Championships or because he is French (Ignorance eh?).

In the Dirt interview recap, Sam said something to the effect of that he was happy that it was Fabien who beat him, and not some of those "other" guys. I think that really says alot about both Sam and Fabien.

Couldnt agree more, have pretty much the same impression after talking to him at the World Cup after party in Canberra last year. Great guy

Super effort on his part yesterday, everyone pretty much made mistakes, Hill included and definitely the best rider on the day won.

hope you are not reading into that comment to be anything more than Sam saying he is glad he beat all the guys who are in front of him in points. any one of the other top 5 guys would be saying the exact same thing.

Glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that! Event though I've known Sam for about 7 years, that one act had me say out loud "Now that is professionalism!" I'm hope others around saw the same thing and had the same reaction.

It's all been said already, but ala Livigno 05 and Fort Bill 07, there's no two people I'd be happier to see on the top steps of the podium.

AMEN!

This is one of the many reasons I like DH so much - at its core it's a gentleman's sport.

Haven't seen the footage of the podium yet - where can I find it?

If I'm not mistaken - I believe Fabien has a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. Never met the guy, but I think what sets him apart is that he can relate to bike geeks and speak their technical vernacular, articulate his feelings about a race eloquently, or just hang out and make small talk. A very well-rounded rider.

CK - It was during the awards ceremony presentation. I just left the freecaster running and happened to catch it by chance. Check the different photogs to see if they caught anything from awards.

Gotcha - I'll try to dig it up somewhere... Freecaster doesn't like my computer right now for some reason... must be the web-based gonhorrea...

I think freecaster just doesn't like your part of the world. Seems like a bunch of guys from NJ & PA were bitching about the speeds. No prob here on the other side of NYC with my connection though.

Freecaster has recently become awful where I am (NJ). The live stuff plays great, but it takes 20 minutes to load a 5 minute video. Wasn't a problem until a couple of weeks ago.

Oh, and congrats to Fabien. I was watching Warner's interview with him before the race and thinking "wouldn't it be fantastic if he could win one this season."

Cool to see Fabien win. I really like his style of riding, so precise. Reminds me of Nico.

With Sabrina winning on Rocky Mountains, this has to be the biggest DH success the company has ever had, No?
Regina Stiefel won a lot back in the day! I don't know if you can count this as DH success though, AMP rear ends on XC frames. :D

Anyone know if Barel actually used WTB tires....?....
No, he was on cut down Wetsrceams. So was the Kenda Morewood team - but that's nothing new, isn't it.

To see Fabien in the lower fast wood section in person was absolutely crazy -he was totally on fire and don' t forget: Fabien had a very bad crash in Maribor two years ago.

Congrets Fabien......
