Picked up a 2004 Demo 9 last fall. I have about 5 rides on the bike at North Star this year. My rear DHX 5.0 has a 400 x 3.25 spring. With gear on I weigh in at 212lbs. Just looking for some other Demo 9 guys who are riding with a DHX 5.0. What is your rear spring rate? And how much do you weigh? I think I need at least 450lb or 500lb spring. Thanks in advance....

I'm ~160lbs and used to run a 400lb/in on my demo. It was perfect for my weight and riding style. My buddy who still has his demo is about 180lbs and runs a 450lb/in. I bet you'll want a 500lb/in.

I am 210lb and originally had a 400 and it was to soft... went to a 500 and for my riding style it was too much. I ride at Plattekill (US/NorthEast) mostly and do most of the stuff except the really large drops (Maxxis drop etc) and like the 400 a lot more. A 450 is probably the best choice. Reason I didn't like the 500 was the backend was "rigid" feeling and didn't give me the feedback that I like. I am a very light footed rider and with a 500lb the small/stutter bumps were a little harsh (this is with rebound/comp adjusted). I would consider your terrain and riding style and go from there.

400lb = no large drops or big hits
450lb = smoother rider and nice transitions
500lb = going huge or you like to plow

Best of luck!

Thanks everyone for the posts. Opening day at my local mountain (Northstar) I was bottoming out on the seat. So I pumped up the air chamber to right around 145 with the bottom out resistance between the middle line and last line. 2 clicks in on the pro predal. Bike handled great with no bottoming out issues that I could tell.

If I was to take my air chamber to 175 psi with a 400 spring will it ride similar to 500 lb with 75 psi? I am just trying to figure out how this shocks works...

Also I rode my nephews 2008 Demo 7 with a DHX 4.0 with a 500 spring and it seemed to stiff to me. Maybe I am comparing apples to oranges with the Demo 7 and 4.0 to my Demo 9 and 5.0???

Thanks for the help people.....!!!

I have a demo 9. I have ridden a newer demo 8. The demo 9's are bigger, more plush, and more forgiving. As far as I could tell, the newer demo 8's are more race oriented. I would definetly prefer to ride my demo 9 over the newer 8's though, and am getting into racing.

I'm 203lbs with gear.
I ran a 450lb with an Avy.
The setup was a tad soft but the Avy stopped it from ever bottoming harshly.
You should definitely be on a 500lbs spring.

Adding pressure to compensate for the low spring rate is not going to work the same as running the correct spring rate with lower pressure.

Increasing the pressure will increase overall compression damping not just bottom out resistance. This will mean too much damping which will feel harsh at high speeds, it will also work the shock harder possibly leading to a blown shock.

The demo9 is a pretty progressive design. It resists bottoming very well. If your bottoming out regularly your probably running way too much sag and not using the travel efficiently. If you run too much sag the bike is too deep in its travel and your going to be working the in the bottom half of its travel range where it gets really progressive. This will make the bike harsh as well as wallowy an overall sucky suspension setup IMO.

Ok guys I was able to pick up a 450 x 3.25 Fox shock today from my friends that own a local shop. I figure I will test this spring before I move up to a 500. My 400 works well. I just would like to have more spring and less psi in the shock. With my 400 I was at 100 psi. 2 click on the propedal and between the middle and last line on the bottom out resistance.

With the 450 spring I set my sag at 30%. I wanted to get some feedback on the guys running the 450 spring how they have their bottoming out resistance setup, psi level and pro pedal settings?

Thanks.......
