Blindly running into cactus
Motomike and Trill Will were gracious enough to let Noah and I get a sneak peak at the Dirty Bird this weekend after the Beech Mtn race. Those guys have done a helluva job on some prime trail construction. The course is fun without being scary but technical enough to be challenging for the fast guys.

My boy has recently started showing more interest in 'real' DH (closest thing he's ridden before this month was a fun and flowy SuperD course). He's been hucking and dirt jumping since he was 4 and now i think he's finally big enough to control his bike/brakes well enough to start DH. I took him to a local ,easy, shuttle spot a few weeks ago and, to my surprise, he let go of the brakes and picked lines i wouldn't have imagined a 9 year old would pick; jumping from rocks into berms and leaning his bike over in flat turns like a pro.

Then on Sunday, we hit up the Dirty Bird. the pics and vids just don't show the steepness of this track and the downhill bermage is stupid fun. Noah was a little hesitant on the steep stuff but started to get the hang of it. I think he got a little freaked out on the long rock garden because he wanted to do it but got the "hesitation fear" after a few run-up attempts at the drop in for it. the rest of that first run was crap as he was kinda shook up and had a hard time relaxing.
he took a break and went back up again, did much better and the smile returned to his face while he was blasting through the smaller rock gardens. he still was a little nervous in the steep berms near the bottom but did great for his 2nd shot at a new course.

anyway, mucho thanks and kudos to motomike, trill, muelstar and anyone else who has built that course...it has the potential to be a NC mecca :thumb:

for sure. friend of mine's son will be outgrowing his stinky jr. pretty soon and another local has a big hit grom for sale so either way, he'll be on a 24" FS rig by next season.

Nice dude! Always rad to see the little rippers out there, Noah especially!

We've got a kid on our team that is 12 now but started shredding when he was 8 on a 24" Kona Stinky Jr. as well. He moved up to a Yeti 303 with 24" rear wheel, a custom rear air shock from Push, and a Float 36 when he was 10 or 11. Now he rocks full size wheels on a small Yeti R-DH with a Fox 40 and KILLS it... kid jumps 35+ foot gap jumps like it's his job and barely weighs in at 90# soaking wet.

Not trying to one-up Noah, just letting you know what sort of insanity *cough*financial*obligation*cough* you can expect to deal with in the next few years... ;)

EDIT: Look at this... Noah has a better attack position on the bike than half the fast guys I know... Elbows out, eyes ahead, fingers off the brakes!

it had always been frustrating trying to find bikes that fit noah because he's so small for his age (fifth percentile overall on the growth chart at the docs office).
i'm really looking forward to more custom bike building with him as he gets taller and stronger and noah really looks up to the other groms we hang with at the races. there are some FAST kids in this area but none on 20's (mtb anyway, lots of bmxicans) so it can be tough for him, sometimes, to understand why he has such a hard time in certain sections when kids only a year or two older fly right through them. at least he's got the right foundation so that when his body catches up with the bikes he'll be ripping it for sure :thumb:

a visual aid for his lack of size/height: :D
he's the oldest kid in this picture, he's got a year on the tall redhead

im jealous of your kids steez, considering hes so young and on little wheels he looks incredibly comfortable an a ripper for sure. On the other hand having ridden nothing but bmx for the last few months whilst at uni my first ride back on my chameleon had me looking like a spastic bambi on ice.

Another perspective of the steep berms from the end of the clip. Props to Noah for riding that section!

I sure wouldn't ride the rock garden on 20 inch wheels, I don't blame him. I've seen some pinners crash there too.

he's really bothered about not hitting it and has been asking when we're going back. i'm torn, i know he has the ability to hit it yet i know that if he crashes hard in those rocks it'll kill his confidence. oh well, i'm not pushing it but i won't stop him if he wants to try.

crappy pic of the rock garden in question. i should have taken the pic from the top where the steepness is more visible in a photo.

Hes got a stinky24. its like a 04 or older model. it works great he even races xc on it. only thing i would change for real dh riding is gearing and a shock that has more adjustments it has a vanilla coil and works good but the right suspension setup is key. He started bmx about a year ago when we told him no more MX, cuz of all the injuries he has had. he races 9novice in Nbl.

Great pick of Noah, posted a pic on the sol vista thread of Matt my 12 y.o. He started with a stinky 24 when he was 8 and weighed about 70#. Heavy bike but very forgiving, only thing we changed out were the brakes. Stepped up to a 303 with a float up front and an RP23 and a 24 " rear rim, and now on the small 303-RDH (great stand over and really responsive for a little guy). Like Evan said, having a little guy that can take advantage of high level bike adds up the costs pretty quick, but they tend to hold up a lot better with a 90# rider:)
Congrats on Noah's continued progression, it's been fun to watch, and should be for a long time:thumb:

just make sure he continues to have fun with it at that age, dont push him. seen a lot of little league parent syndrome even in biking.
I hear you, the cool thing about this age is that you watch them try and kill it on the course, and 2 minutes after the race, they just want to go ride with their friends.
We've been really fortunate, Matt's been riding for RPM-Yeti since he was 10, even though he's the youngest kid by a long shot, he's had some great kids to ride with, and first class coaching. Puts me in the role of shuttle driver and his number one student "you know Dad, I noticed you're not looking far enough through your turns on that run...." Keeps a big dose of humble pie coming my way each time we ride, but it's great fun to be a part of:D
