Another pedal question

Not to beat a dead horse, but I've been riding clips again after being on flats for a long time and I can't decide which pedals to use. The only 2 clipless pedals that I am interested in are Time Z controls, and the Shimano DX. The Times are obviously much more floaty, and the Shimanos are just solid. I've ridden both in the past, and I've just borrowed a pair of standard low end shimano pedals to test out for a few days.

After screwing around with both this evening, I'm more used to the Times, but the Shimanos are just so solid I can't discount them right away. Does anyone have any info or suggestions regarding these 2 pedal systems? I'm riding everything from smooth flowy Santa Cruz trails to gnarly rock strewn Northstar runs, so there isn't a specific kind of riding I'm doing.

Thanks.

I've always been more of a fan of Shimano's SPD's, I've tried the Times, but still always run back to Shimano. Been doing the SPD thing for 18 years now.

I haven't used either as a DH type pedal but I've used both as XC pedals. The action of the Shimanos is a bit lighter (or so I thought) on the release. One thing that I really disliked about the SPD was the amount of crud they would collect. I think Shimano has done a bunch over the years to improve that so it may or may not still be an issue. I'm currently using Time's on my bike and they work just fine.

I've got Shimanos on my XC bike and Times on my DH bike. In my experience, the Times are easier to get back into if I have to pull a foot out for whatever reason. The SPD's are solid when you're in them, but I don't like to be hunting around with my foot to get clipped back in while DHing.

Mud clearance is also crap on the SPDs, while Times are pretty good.

Word. Exaclty my opinion. Atomlab quicksteps also work quite good for me but they give trouble with some shoes

Kind of a highjack here, but I have been thinking of trying clips on my dh bike and was just wondering how hard it is to get use to? I notice myself rarely taking my feet off so that s what got me thinking.
