Stik sums it up pretty well, but there was nothing official till we did some test rides @ Fontana (thank you Donny). Palm was like a kid in a candy store in our shop, well you might even see him welding up some of his own frames,
RTW has some time set aside for him.
There is a lot of Palmer DNA at Intense and the guy is very Old school.
I think he is at a crossroads in his life that is just as much about where he has been as to where he will be going, deals aside,he is figuring this out.
The Palmer of a decade ago still really wants to win but the older , wiser Palmer hell he still wants to win , face it he likes to win.

I shouldn't be talking about any of this, not that its CIA sh1t...but here is how the last 12 months went down, in a very small nutshell.

Last summer, we all know Palm tested with Peaty and Greg, was gonna be a syndicate member, race some world cups all in an effort for training-for palmers olympic bid. The Santa Cruz hookup was inspired by Peaty and Palm assumed with Santa Cruz he could work out a nice salary for this mini-comeback.

When I saw Palm in person last october I told him he was a douche for not even giving Jeff(intense) a call for some bikes, Palm said he thought Santa Cruz could get him some more money and at this point was all about money/hanging with peaty/liking the VPP/liking santa cruz/digging roskopp, I gave Palm a ration of sh1t for not giving Jeff a ring, he felt bad, but nothing ever came of it. So all winter Santa Cruz tried to get some outside sponsor money for Palm and apparently that didn't pan out.

Up until 2 weeks ago there was still no Intense/Palmer communication. Jeff called Palmer and said 'atleast come try a bike'...Palmer came down, pretty much rode an intense around in the parking lot it was a done deal...he felt like he was home.

Jeff would probably chime in but with getting some new models finalized, the new Palmer stuff (Jeff is going to the canada world cup rounds and europe) he is pretty pinned right now.

I figure the fans wanted to know, so there is my 2 cents.
Thnx for the info Stik! Looks it was not just about fun and training for Olympics, but also for the money...but Palmer is a champ and a walking advert and nothing is really for free today.

About what Stik said , that was then this is now , if it was all about the $ he wouldn't be on an Intense.
haha, ya, I forgot to add that come summer 2009 Palmer found that no one had any money and just wanted to be on the best bike for him.

I did think it was funny a year ago when he told me he wanted to 'get paid'...I told him he was crazy, this is still the MTB biz and still the MTB biz in 2009! ;)

I can only tell what I know about why he isn't on Evil. Palm wanted some ownership of the company as compensation to ride the bikes, and like you said, in 2009, that's not realistic.

I think it's a better story, better for the sport, and awesome for Intense that he's back on Intense. It just feels right to me!

Master of many sporting disciplines, marketing icon, and at the same time a savvy businessman. Is there anything he can't do? :D Glad he found a good home. Not like it was a loosing proposition, where ever he landed with those 3 options would have been a good home. Indeed a great story though, I've had fun watching it all unfold. :thumb:

Next up....Bode Miller inks a deal with Transition Bikes.

Oh..and I agree with Weagle that it's for the best that he isn't on Evil. That's eerily apocolyptic. hah hah!! Palmer + Slayer + Evil = Ragnarok

Intense + Napalm = coolest shiz ever. Some of my earliest and fondest memories of MTB are made in that combination of cool.

I cannot wait for MSA.

I was pondering the other day if Palms return was in any way inspired/motivated by Nico turning up last year and stomping it in qualifiying?

A bit late on the photos but who cares? It's Napalm!

Bigger here and here if you want to know what color sock he runs. You know, if you like that kind of stuff.

yeah seriously psyched about having him back in the sport, back when i first got into DH was when he was taking the dh world by storm. I cant say i have many 'idol's' but being a teenager then id have to say he was one.

I remember i was at 7 springs for the national and completely blew up on the course, wrecked my elbow and had blood all over the place. Got to the bottom of the mtn and palmer was standing there saw my arm and said 'My man that is gnarly' and gave me the devil horns...made my day as a 14 year old kid...

pretty interested to see how he does on the garbo dh this year, ill be up on the course for that race.

I got something else to point out about Palmer that is way different than back in the day. He's never been on a bike that could last a whole weekend under him. Back in the day, he snapped off bottom brackets, bent crank arms, destroyed chain guides, blew up shocks, crushed rims, flatted, ripped off derailleurs and rode gum sole Vans.

Now the dude is on a bike that he most likely can't break and some 5.10 shoes. To think that along with a comeback from him, we'll actually see him able to sprint across the line on a working bike....it blows my mind.

Guys like him, Cully and Shaums...the equipment wasn't really ready for them back then. It's a shame to think the big rippers had to dial it back a notch just to make a bike last them a full run. The two biggest beasts on the mountain at Mt. Snow were Kovarik and Shaums and neither could finish a race run there because they'd have to leave bits in pieces of their bikes on the mountain.

Somebody set up a crappy version of Freecaster...please!!! I gotta see this.

^ hmmm, man, I was at every event back in those days, Joe Buck (his mechanic) lived at our house and Palm stayed with us many a time and I don't remember more than a few times he had mechanicals like that.

I think you have Palmer and Orlando Martinez confused.

And Cully with all those issues?? no one has ever been as smooth or will ever be as smooth as cully and he rarely tore sh1t up either.

And those mechanicals added up to how many points? That's all I'm saying.

And seriously, even as smooth as Cully was, you're telling me you didn't replace bent bash guards on his bikes like they were going out of style (I saw what he did at Seven Springs to one trying the left line every run) ...and that his rear shocks were actually working at all times? Or that he never bent one of those priceless XTR cranks? I think maybe you're forgetting how deep and full your replacement parts bin was in those days;)

I've seen your hybrid rear cassettes that you used to build to keep chains from sucking into the rear wheel and you were one of the lucky few mechanics to actually put their riders on that setup. More often than not, a nice long derailleur on a flexy rear swingarm got torqued and hopped into the spokes come race time for oh so many pros.

How many pros finish a run on a mechanical these days? The total pro mechanical DNF's from an entire National series today would be almost the equivalent to a single race back then. :weee:

I don't recall Palm and Cully breaking a lot of stuff, but I do remember Shaums breaking just about everything. He even broke a friends prototype frame in the parking lot at the Michigan national one year.

LOL

That basically described every DH bike back in those day! I remember surrendering may parts to the mountain at almost every PKill race back then and I sukked!
