This is all pointless. It could have feathers, sparkles and a big rubber dong on the mouth guard, and its still going to sell just because it says TLD on it. TLD could put his logo on dog **** and sell it to racers, and they wouldn't blink at paying twice as much for a product thats exactly the same as one with a different name.
Know anywhere online that I could get that dog **** with the logo on it?

the current clothing line is a great case in point. i think it's a running gag @ tl - like, lets launch THIS ridiculous graphic & see if they'll buy it this time. and people inevitably do. as a consequence they progressively push the limits of ridiculousness to see just how far blind fanboyism will supercede common sense / good taste. troy, you sly devil. looking forward to seeing those gay pride lids for 2011.

that said, i've yet to find a better fitting AND looking helmet than the d2. i just stripped the graphic & run clear carbon. a graphic free option would rock.

i completely 100% agree. As an airbrush artist myself, his paintjobs have gone DOWNHILL. I'm not sure if you have ever been to his shop or seen their work in person but it's horrendous. All about mass production and little about creativity and quality. Now that's all well and good if that's what you are striving for...but the quality of the paintjobs are horsesh!t. The helmet is never taken apart, vents etc on helmets don't work anymore because they are painted right over.... horrible paint edges and lines on everything. For what you pay the quality is crap. As far as his product line... I use to like it, now the styling just makes you go "uh?" I mean they had that lucha gear...wtf? Their graphic designer/product developer needs to be fired.

On the plus side, i LOVE their helmets. I have heard nothing but quality control issues when it comes to sizing, but if you get one that fits, it's awesome. I have an SE and have tried on the SE2 and both are great. I've had an original daytona and 2 D2s...and will probably get a D3 if it's more protective. Right when it comes down to it, TLD is still 2nd to Arai :)

We just need to petition Arai to make a DH helmet...

I have an Arai motorcycle helmet and agree, it's SO, SO much nicer than my Giro Remedy CF DH helmet it's ridiculous. Tried on a TLD helmet recently and that was awfully nice as well...might look at this d3 whenever it's out.

Obviously you must not have watched the Vegas supercross finale. Fox has some the gaudiest stuff period. But in moto, ALL the vendors have ridiculous kits. Look at Bryn Atkinson's NOFEAR kits this year. Thor has plaid and at Vegas some crazy shimmery silver strips all over a kit. You can't even read a SHIFT jersey they're so out there. Moose, Answer, MSR, UFO, Oneal..on down the line.

My buddy who used to work at one moto company said the real laugher about TLD apparel is they order from the exact same catalog in Asia as his company and most every other one, the same jerseys and materials, but charge twice the price for the exact same clothing.

Imagine buying a pair of Saint cranks for $300 if FSA had the exact same for $150 but it didn't say Saint.

I had to quote that, we used to bust this guys chops a bit, about the clapped out helmet he wore for a couple years (a clapped-out visor-less Giro Mad Max in og red). After much debate and dragging of feet, he finally settled on one, a '09 TLD D2 (great I thought) in Lucha paint...

I don't get it... THE has been coming out with some pretty awesome helmet designs, they're just as well made as a TLD, if not better and they're cheaper, but people still go ape sh!t whenever TLD comes out with something new.

i like it! a bit square-ish like my deviant.. (although different class)

D2s are clean and sleek but slightly too common as THE and 661 looks nearly the same in my opinion..

... also the new graphics will be TLD's standard which is always cool...

hope the price is reasonable though :)

Your buddy is either a liar, or an idiot...or a lying idiot. I have seen the TLD design/manufacturing process and its nothing like your 'buddy' mentions. Might be made in the same 'place' but its certainly not 'ordered out of a catalog'. The stupid pills being taken on RM lately have surpassed alarming levels.

Just an observation on the current topic at hand: It seems odd that comments run the gamut from: "I hate TLD gear for reason A, B, C,..." to "...but I love their helmets... I have their helmet... etc..." often times in the same breath. :)

Sure - you could get the same CSPC protection for your dome from Bell, 661, THE, OGK, Fox, etc. for a MUCH cheaper price but... a lot of guys seem to gravitate towards the TLD gear (helmets and all) anyway.

Graphics notwithstanding - the design of their moto clothing line is cut pretty well and looks cool (with the trim and other bits) - even if it were completely blank with nothing on it. The same could be said of their helmet line (SE, SE2, D2, and now the D3). Some guys really like the shape, look, and feel of the helmets. Even if the helmets too, were completely blank. (I wonder if I'm giving the guys from TLD any ideas as I write this :D )

Because this is a discussion that involves the appreciation of design, lines, and aesthetics in general, this is all about personal interpretation - what looks like the coolest thing in the world to one guy, another may be completely indifferent. Personally I really dug the 2009 Limited Edition 70's moto themed gear as well as some of their GP line. The "Kabuki" SE2 graphics were pretty awesome as well as some of the D2 graphics including the badass hotrod themed "Palmer" lid. One thing that TLD IS really good at is innovating new graphics and graphic packages for their product line.

THAT said... TLD's current trend of "pajama" themed moto gear dosen't really appeal to me. Additionally the 80's retro "banana yellow / hot pink" themes aren't my cup of tea either... by the same token - this DOES in a way make their product standout and somewhat unique from the other companies out there. It's TL's company and it seems he's reached the point creatively where he can take risks and stick it out there. When you think about it - THAT'S pretty cool. To have success to the degree where you can put out there what gets YOU off personally... and if the masses dig it - so be it.

In the end - all of you guys are talking about it, myself included, and at the very least THAT is something a lot of other companies would like to have.

well put ck.

some people like and dislike the pink and yellow and the bright colored crap... but have you gone to the mall lately? i for one love black sneakers, i will not wear a white sneaker ever... when i go to the mall i see purple/green/zebra printed high top kicks. WTF?! cant even buy sneakers that i like now a days, i had to desgin my own "gnar" shoes on enties.com.

needless to say this is the style now and i can see how it made its way into moto/DH gear. kids like it so companies make it. if you dont like the new bright TLD gear, check out nema's gear :thumb:

Thanks man - yeah, the flouro colors are reflective of trends from the 80's... They (not sure who "they" are - but "they" do talk a lot - don't they? *name that movie* :D ) say that trends repeat themselves in cycles every 20 years or so, hence the resurgence of bright BRIGHT flourescent colors that make your retinas bleed.

i bought a THE One carbon helmet and the fit and finish was great, but the facemask on the XL was basically sitting on my mouth. if they came bigger i would have swapped it out for it.
my D2 XL/XXL fits perfect...for a lot more money

Hmm, I am kinda undecided, on the one hand I really like the helmet. As others have it is pretty much just an evolution, the sport changes so the helmets and safety gear have to change to keep up.

But on the other hand, I am certain that you or I will not be able to purchase the helmet with the plain jane graphics treatment that Peaty and Hill were running, which kinda bums me out a bit.

I will wait to see what the production graphics look like before I decide whether to replace my faithful D2.

IMO, the last decent run of gear TLD had was 2008. More solid colours as opposed to Designs, Flashy, Lightning bolts, polka dots etc. It might just be me but I think gear needs to be kept simple. Ive really been liking the look of the Royal "Stealth" line. and the Nema stuff looks awesome too. (as far as "racing" brands go)

Agreed. 2008 TLD GP Air Solid Yellow outfit was mint, favorite kit of all time.

Stik, how does what you said differ greatly from what I just said. If you're talking about the design/manufacturing process, tell me what it is about it that makes TLD's end product twice the cost of Brand X. Just because he knows how to use a computer program that incorporates the TLD logo? Or is there honestly something they do that is so drasticly different that makes the jersey from Asia cost so much more with their graphic on it?

And I'm not being a smartass. I'm asking so you can enlighten a few people.

I am not trying to hate. Just want a logical reason.:thumb:
