sram x0 shifter rear 9spd skipping

Hi,

I got a strange problem with my x0 shifter. It skips.

Let me explain. when the cable is fully released, I can go up one speed. Then if I try to change gear again, it will skip, but if I continue my motion, the lever continues and it will shift for 1 gear.

That's the only 3 gears I have. After that point, if I try to shift, the shifter just skips.

push *little clicking noise*. Did nothing.


I disassemble the shifter to find the problem, but I couldn't seems to find any.

I don't know the names, but I'll try to explain what I think happens.

On the upper part of the shifter, there's a plastic roller where you insert the cable. Under this roller, there's some teeth that are used to crank the cable.

The roller is cranked with a notch that comes from the lower assembly of the shifter, this assembly is linked to the thumb lever.

What I think happens (but not sure), is that either the teeth of the roller or the notch from the lower assembly are worn out and don't "trigger" anymore. It skips. But again, I'm really not sure if that's the real problem.


Now I heard about sram shifter's rebuild kit, but can't seems to find any information on those.

So bottom line:
1. Does anyone have an idea of what the problem is?
2. Does anyone have information on the rebuild kits. What they contains, if it may fix my problem?

No offense if this is too obvious.

Before taking the lever apart did you try to manually pull cable down after a sticky shift?

Often the problem with sticky levers isn't in the lever but friction in the cable run. The RD return spring isn't strong enough to pull the cable fully on upshifts, and on some levers this causes the cam and ratchet not to complete a cycle. Re-assemble the lever and do an upshift, then pluck the exposed cable away from the frame like a guitar string. If this solves the sticking and trim problems, firld strip and re-lube/replace the cables and housings.

Hi, thanks for your input.

But I should have mentionned it the first time, I already did what you propose.

Before disassembling the shifter, I cleaned/lube the housing and the cable. reinstalled everything, and it was still doing the same thing.

After having re-assemble the shifter, stick the cable in, I tried to shift while holding the cable in my other hand. The pressure i had to apply to make the shifter skip was really small.

Any other ideas??

I am sorry that I have a hard time following your description of your problem. I don't think you should be talking about the shifter internals, not until you accurately describe the problem.

my first question is a simple one.

are you using a SRAM rear derailleur? or a Shimano?

XO shifters work only with SRAM derailleurs.

The problem he is describing is when he tries to shift past 3 cogs in the rear, the shifter will not pull the cable tight enough to make the shift. When he tries to shift, the ratcheting mechanism is not engaging correctly (in my opinion). This is independent of what deraileur he is using.

If he were using a Shimano RD with sram levers his problem would be over, not under shifting.

Having elimanated the cable it sounds like an internal ratchet engagement problem. Possibly the engagement spring is damaged/defective. Disconnect the cable and try shifting the levers against light hand tension on the wire. possibly you'll feel partial engagement and slippage. If so check that the ratchet area of the cam is clean, but more likely you'll need a rebuild kit.

I've fixed a couple x9's and x0's. I have a good guess to whats going on but I kinda wanna keep it a secret. PM me and I'll give you my mailing addy. Ship it over with $5 for return shipping and I'll open it up for you. If I have spare parts or can remedy your shifter problem without replacing parts, I'll ship it back fully assembled. If I can't fix it... then we'll handle that if/when it happens.

So far I've fixed Sluck's x0 and TkCastles x9 with great success.

That's exactly the problem I have. The ratchet system seems to fail. Unfortunately, it seems my shifter is scrapped.

Thanks for the offer. But before contacting you, I'll try to have a warranty on it. According to a post on mtbr, a guy had the same problem and it was warrantied by sram. Maybe it's a common problem? If the warranty claim fail, I'll get in touch with you.

I know it's a very old thread, but I'm experiencing the same problems as described above.
Maybe you want to share this solution now?
Anyway I'm living Belgium so I can not send you my triggers.

Having the same problem. Front derailleur SRAM XO skips middle gear. Opened it up to see if any debris or other signs were there. None. Noted a small black pin sticking up from a nut that holds a metal plate in place. It seems that if the nut is loose the mechanism may jump due to misalignment. Tightened it just a bit and replaced the cap. Simple test at the house showed no jumping. Need to hit the mountain and see if there is any improvement in this skipping. Hope this helps.
