Bad luck for two riders...

So today I started my first run down Upper Dominion and got waved down on the 3rd table by a guy whose buddy had overshot the 2nd double, OTB'd and broken his collarbone. Diablo staff shows up, and the injured rider gets on the lift to go back down.

His buddy is still fine, he and I go our separate ways. I finish my run, get back to the top of the lift, and see the friend limping back to the lift. His bike looks...weird. When he gets closer I can see that his stem had snapped almost all the way off and his bars were barely attached. I asked him what happened, he was only able to say "Hurts when I talk, think I broke a rib."

Bad luck for that group. Hope they heal up quick. Can't believe they both got injured within an hour of each other and on the same run. Was one of the weirder things I've seen at Diablo.

Terrible news.... hope they do feel much better....

one of the reasons why i clean and double check my bike, components for any cracks or tweaks before i even head up to Diablo....

Def.hope those guys heal up and get better and back to riding asap... healing vibes!!!

Yeah it's funny because this was my second day back after 2 months out for a broken collarbone and what's the first thing I see? A dude lying on the ground with a broken collarbone!

I guess if my friend and I both got hurt riding the same day and both were taken to the hospital it'd be cool to be in the same room. At least you'd have someone to talk to.

At a domination race I had to go to the hospital because I got a concussion and broke my nose... A kid next to me had a broken leg from dominion...

Man.. that sucks. lots of injuries this year, even though I see a LOT more people there with full armor.

Other than helmets and spine plates, I don't think standard MTB armor will really prevent bones from breaking if you wipe out fast enough to break bones, if that makes sense. (I don't consider the Leatt brace to be armor in the strictest sense of the word, even though it also prevents broken bones)

Collarbone breaks are the most common cycling injury and no armor is able to protect that area because it'd be extremely uncomfortable and restrictive.

I think the purpose of most armor is to prevent scrapes, cuts and bruises, not fractures.

Also notable is that the vast majoritty of collarbone injuries dont involve anything coming in contact with the collar bone!! (Put arms out, compress when hit, snaperoony!)

Yep - I broke my collarbone with full armor on. Oh well.

I'm amazed no-one got eaten by the bears on Alpine on Sunday. :D

you guys think that if there was some sort of armor with flexible collarbone reinforcement, that people would buy it?

Like say there was some sort of jointed plastic pipe that can flex with the rider but provide additional support for shoulder impacts so that the chances of breaking a collarbone will reduce. You think it could sell?

Yup thats a short one. easy to overshoot. its deceiving since most riders expect the jumps to get progressively longer. Last time I was there I landed in an endo in between the 2nd and 3rd tables. My underwear was some how still clean:weee:.

You can wrap your shoulders in steel plate - if you crash and put your arms out, you can break the CB regardless - armor cant help.

Shoudlers are a common injury for mountain bikers... Broken collarbon or ACJ joint separation:

http://www.privatehealth.co.uk/articles/april-2007/shoulder-surgery/

"Another common shoulder injury is to disrupt the acromio-clavicular joint (ACJ) which is the lumpy part at the end of the collar-bone where it joins the shoulder-blade. The usual mechanism for this is a fall onto the point of the shoulder and I see this most frequently in mountain bikers. Depending on the angle and force of that fall, the ACJ can either be sprained or the two elements can be torn apart. In the latter situation you will feel an obvious step on the point of the shoulder - and a lot of pain!"

yeah the pain sucks.... still hurts from time to time on me (level 3 ACJ separation) and now my shoulder blade from time to time gets numb...... very weird.....

i have personally witnessed so many broken collarbones within the past year, not to mention my own. left broke twice and the right is still broken but healing fast. nothing you can really do. i helped out two people at diablo this season, both with broken clavicles. i am getting a leatte brace now that i have had the scare of a spinal injury. i hope it doesnt rest on your collarbone though, it looks like it might. if you hit something hard, the brace could break you clavicle, i dont know, any feedback on that?
