The track is dry, fast, and ROUGH right now. I keep making friends with new rocks each time I walk the track.
Two huge rock slabs popped out after the Trilliam Ninja Booter last I saw. how was the rooty section after the rock garden after we opened it up a little more?

So here's my thought, the Beech Mtn trail kicked my ass pretty good and I was planning on doing all three of the triple crown events. After seeing the pictures and video of the Dirty Bird and seeing that it's pretty much the same amount of driving to get there, I'm thinking about swapping Beech mtn # 2 for the dirty bird race.

any thoughts? I'm basically looking for variation of terrain and after my piss poor showing at beech, I'm thinking that it would be cool to throw this one in the mix.

Its definitely a variation in terrain but we in no way want to take anything away from the Beech races. Thats entirely up to you. We deliberately scheduled the race to not be back to back weekends with the Beech races and the Snowshoe races to help out the people traveling pretty far. You decide, I'm sure you'll enjoy either race...

Yeah, not trying to detract from the Beech series. We are aiming to increase people's desire to come race in the high country, not divide their options on where they'd go.

How about BOTH?

yeah I saw those, it looks like its gonna be awesome once that section breaks in. The roots after the rock garden were way fast with some trees gone. It really has gotten crazy rooty in there recently.

I'd love to do both, but it's just too much driving to make 2 trips in 1 month from south florida, plus the time off work.

And I apologize putting out the vibe that it's trail vs. trail, that was not my intention at all. I think it's really cool that Beech is doing a series and even cooler that the ski resorts are opening trails for these events.

Well, if you do the Hawksnest race, you'll get a change of pace and a shot at some seriously fast zip line action 5 feet from the finish line. And, wow...is that zip line fast!

Really looking forward to this race. Looks like you guys put a lot of hard work and time into building it. Did I hear right that there will not be a open day to check it out before the race weekend?
Well we really wanted to do it, but I think by now we might as well just wait until the race. Don't worry though, there will be PLENTY of practice time.

And I apologize putting out the vibe that it's trail vs. trail, that was not my intention at all.

Not at all, I met Ryan last year at the wolf and Mueller and Moto had a hand in the beech trail, and were the head gnarchitects behind the bird. I just wanted to jump out and make it clear that we're all part of the same riding community before any of that crap started up.

Totally understand the fact that you've gotta choose one, and I can't tell you how great a problem that is...too many sweet races? Way better than not having any to choose from.

Right now the race is barely over a month away... The likelihood that we'll get together the logistics for an open day AND get a date that doesn't conflict with anything else AND have enough time to do publicity for it is pretty slim.

Don't sweat it though, there'll be plenty of time to practice. The race is a 2-day event. If you choose to race it and and don't end up on the podium, I think it'd be safe to say that an open day 2 weeks prior wouldn't have been the difference maker.

So if your main concern is whether or not its a trail you want to ride, keep in mind its rideable on everything from a hardtail to a v-10 and you'll be looking at $50 for 2 days of riding and an awesome atmosphere.

We've all built some phenomenal trails that encompass all that Southern DH has to offer. Now, if we can talk Ryan into letting us do some new sections for the second Beech race to keep the creativity comin....:thumb:
I second that. I'd like to see the course be a bit more back and forth across the hill. I love the course as is. I do think there is a ton more potential up there.

Yep, apparently we're racing northstar in mid-october so it could turn into a snow race.
I hope it doesn't look like this:

That's the top of Squaw with the lake in the background. If you haven't been to Tahoe yet, your gonna love it. The crystal blue water with big 10k and
11k peaks in the background. N* is actually "over the mountain" from the Lake and most of it faces Truckee, but it's a short drive to get to Kings Beach which is on the lake. Go to the Nevada side for some Casino action if your feeling lucky. South Lake has the best casinos and lots of shops and restaurants, but it's 30 minutes + drive from N*. There used to be a skatepark that allowed bikes in Truckee (which is 5 minutes from N*). The riding is great = Wild Toad, Rim trail, Flume, Immigrant trail (xc - that the Donner party actually used) etc.. Wife is from near there and we go a lot - went once in October and it was perfect, high 60's during the day and high 30's at night.

You can PM Kidwoo on here for more as he knows what's up out there. I'd stay there as long as I could if I were you guys.

Appalachian moved up on my list due to CU Boulder being stupidly expensive, I'm thinking about coming down for the race to check the school out again and meet you guys. What would be the best airport to fly into?

If you're in town for that Friday I'm sure you may could find some guys in town to do some runs with at some other trails.

* Although on second thought, many may be busy taping the course etc, but you could probably at least check the course out if nothing else. *

I'll be a senior this year. I've heard a lot of good things about it and want to spend some more time there before I decide how to apply and all that stuff. I know a lot of people from the other schools that I'm applying to but I haven't met any of you guys so I'm looking forward to it.

I took my first ride of the bird this weekend, your first run down will leave you grinning and asking for more. If anyone is debating on a race to go to this season, make the Dirty Bird, that race!

Huge thanks to Chris Wyatt for hooking us up with a ton of Specialized Clutch DH tires to hand out! Definitely one of my current favorite tires out right now... you're the man Chris!

For camping, I would check out Grandfather Campground, right across from the entrance to Hawksnest off of 105 at the base of Grandfather Mountain. If you are looking for a hotel/motel, check out the Smoketree Lodge off of 105, its very close and should have pretty reasonable pricing. Make reservations asap as that weekend is the weekend before classes start up again at App State, so they may be filling up with parents.
