I used 36 all last year with an 11-19 custom block. I decided when building the new bike that I didn't think I ever span 36/11 out in a race, so I went for 34 for increased clearance, less weight, etc etc. Since I did I seem to be spinning out in a lot of races - hell, I'm sure I would even with a 36, it's not much difference. Tempted to try a 38, and maybe add another cog back onto my cassette.

40 with 11/23 or 21 can't remember now. Will want to change to 38 as the 40 is a bit to big right now.

My own world inside my head
36 with a 12/26 Sram cassette, I used to have a 12/32 because it came off my last bike. I thought it would be good to be able to pedal up some, then after a ride or two I came to realize its a DH Bike, no matter what its not going up hill very well. So I bought another bike for uphill, and went with the closer spread for the DH bike.

36t with 11-26 (I think) SRAM PG970DH (I think, maybe) cassette. I have the most wear on my 15 tooth ring but find my self on the 11 tooth ring most of the time that I'm riding lifts. I'm thinking of bumping up to 38t ring. On a Revolt with 165 cranks FWIW. I can pedal most of the trails that I want to ride when I'm earning my laps myself and if I can't crank it I'm ok walking it anyways.

36T and two wheelsets one has 11-23 the other 11-21, both 9 speed cassettes with the top 2 sprockets removed to give 7 speed.. I almost never use anything bigger than the 19T sprocket but stupid SRAM mechs can't limit to any less gears.

I also run a mini DH bike with a 38T ring and 11-30 8 speed, it's just enough spread for riding up the odd fireroad when there are no uplifts if I'm feeling upto it.
