Number 2: Dolly Sods North is where mountain bikers have been riding, racing and doing trail maintenance for the last 20+ years. In 2009, over the objections of almost every local business, all local government and business groups and the U.S. Forest Service, our sell out Congress prostitutes passed the Wilderness legislation that made Dolly Sods North part of the existing Dolly Sods Wilderness. That is reason number one why the Rattlesnake will not start at Timberline this year.
Not to stir the pot anymore, but Dolly Sods North is a small portion of the 2 MILLION ACRES newly designated [read: protected] from destruction under the OPLMA (Omnibus Public Land Mngmnt. Act) all across the country. Why would there be uproar over this? It simply prevents any mechanical intrusion into the area; camping, hiking, birdwatching, etc. are still allowed.
Granted, the 7,000+ acres comprising DSN were valuable to riders, but there are many more millions of acres available to us mountain bikers to utilize and *gulp*, take for granted.

It is sad to see the hard work and trail maintenance of so many riders not available for biking anymore, but rest assured that the land will now not ever fall into the hands of another greedy company wishing to retrieve oil or gas, harvest timber, overgraze, fire mortars into, or destroy (again) the beauty of the land that we ALL have access to.

Back to the subject though, it's a bummer they won't be able to run the Rattlesnake through that part of Dolly Sods ever again. However, it sounds like the birth of this new gravity-oriented mindset at Timberline is really starting to build steam and will hopefully provide us with one more great place to ride and race our bikes and enjoy the grandeur of the area. :thumb:

Oh and more pics (action shots) as well as video coming this evening. Got some pics of the new Creek Gap we built as well, its not very big but it is fun, only about a 12-14ft gap but it is a high speed off camber loamy left turn sweeper coming into it that makes it mucho fun and flowy

Jake (VSBjake) on the high speed stepdown/road gap thingy, picture sucks but it shows the distance, according to his computer he hit it at 25mph and almost cased it the second time.

Jake on the ladder for the rock to rock drop, these next pics are in order on the rock.

Next section on Gnarnia..high speed rock drop to "ferny" section, to the steep section...couldnt get shots on really steep part but you get the idea...loose dirt, with sharp rocks = fun

fern area leading into steep part

towards the bottom of the steep section, couldnt figure out an angle to show how steep it is so the picture kind of sucks but it should give you some idea. If you look at the top of the picture (past the xc rider walking his bike) that is about halfway up the steep section.

New creek gap on another trail, coming into this is high speed, off camber loamy soil...drifty and fun!!! Gap is only about 13-15 ft but super fun and the landing is tech, land flat(think speed jump) get on brakes immediately, and make a sharp right hand turn.

Jake on the jump

Go around for the creek gap, All features shown in the pics WILL be in the race courses next month and all lines will be open to whomever want to hit them. Go around is a 16ft long log ride.

That is all for now....one thing I would like to say is that when you come up...(still waiting for riders!!! ;) ) is to keep in mind that there are only about 5 of us who all drive 3+ hours each way to build voluntarily on our days off and weekends. I personally have gotten in a total of 5 runs the last 6 times I have been ther because of us trying to get this mountain going for DH and Freeride (emphasis on the DH right now) We need to get people up there riding to show the mountain that there is interest.
Thanks,
Adam

Thats because all of us are smart enough to not hit it at mach 4.5 and jump it to basically flat!!! ;) You may have gone the furthest but I was the first to hit it and hit it the smoothest....(the first time) it is actually very smooth at race speed and just dropping it.

Do your homework Almost Heaven! Dolly Sods North was already designated for non-motorized recreation and was already "protected" from "another greedy company wishing to retrieve oil or gas, harvest timber, overgraze,". Dolly Sods North was and still is owned by the U.S. Government who were the ones who fired mortars into the area and by the way, the Wilderness Act does not protect the area from resource extraction if we are at war...in other words they will come in to mine or timber any time they want.

If they are really trying to protect the resource why are horses allowed? If you actually ever went there you would know how bad the trails are getting hammered by horses, not by bikes. The only thing the Obama OPLMA Wilderness bill accomplised here was to eliminate bicycles, special events, mechanized trail maintenance and hurt the local economy.

Wake up Almost Heaven, the environmental movement has been co-opted by Big Business interests...just follow the money trail to the Wilderness Society and thier carpetbagger employees in WV. The only reason we have the Wilderness here is because our coal black representatives needed a new coat of green paint to look good. Next there will be no humans allowed like in the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge.

Blackwater please take it to PM's and not in my thread. This is about what Timberline IS doing and not what IS NOT going on up there anymore, As also just a bit of advice, not real smart to call out Equestrian riders when they are the ones with the Access, Money, AND Power to get trails closed to Mtn. Bikers. You keep those people happy and make them think a little higher of Mtn. Bikers and the trails have a better chance of staying open! If you want to discuss this more please PM me or Almost Heaven and not in this Thread.
Thank You,
Adam

Looking real good, I may be down to check it out August 22nd. How many total DH trails are there at Timberline?
Come on down, as for the amount of trails, there are enough that I cant remember them all.....there are off shoots fuggin everywhere!!! Thats why I am trying to build trails from top to bottom without intersecting others, so no need to worry about merging trails and other stuff.

Also new feature being built in the next two weeks.............4ft drop into a potato chip that will kick you into a 6-7ft drop...should be very fun and flowy. Problem we are having is lack of funds for wood right now, so if anyone wants to donate money or wood to help build some features contact me.
Thanks,
Adam
