Need Disc Road Wheelset...Semi-Affordable and Not Tankish?

I'm going to divert this thread a little - how about a source for some XC rims laced up to mtb hubs - or at least a 135mm rear disc hub. Since I'm road bike-less for the time being it might be good to have a lighter wheelset with narrower rims for pavement duty.

Any ideas folks?

The only decent road spaced disc hubs are from White Industries or Paul.

Why would you want discs on a "road" bike... winterbike?
They're actually for my cross bike. Frame was free and I'm not about to look a gift horse in the mouth to complain about the lack of disc wheels for said cross bike.

I like the disc on the cross bike for bad oregon conditions, but ultimately I could go either way.

I looked at the Speedcity but they are heavier than what I have now and I'm trying to lighten my bike up a bit. Lighter wheels and maybe carbon cockpit parts should help out. I'll check out the FSA's. I'm actually considering just building up a set of WTB LaserDisc lite's to Open Pro's and being done with it. It's a steel frame so 135 will fit if I talk to it right.

Brett! Okay, so maybe I have a reputation for being a touch hard on bikes/parts. That's why my cross bike is a tank!

I didn't break it last year though so I'm going out on a limb and trying to drop some weight. We'll see how it goes. I'm racing B's this season so I gotta fix up the ghetto bike a touch.

Why Not just take a regular MTB hub that is 135 and have it re-spaced , then you can lace it to any rim .
Yeah, in the post two up I think I came to the realization that a light MTB hub is going to be the most affordable option. WTB Laserdisc lites are cheap and light. Any other ideas? Affordable and semi light weight are what I'm going for.

And in general, what would be the most bang for my buck with lighten up a cross bike?

Here is my build (don't laugh, it was all free and I originally built it up as a commuter then on a whim decided to race cross last year for the first time):

Lemond Poprad disc
Ritchey Comp flat bars
Vintage XTR V brake levers
Avid BB5 mechanical brakes
Vintage 8 speed XTR der.
Crap Stx shifters
XT cranks
Deore disc hubs/Mavic MA40 rims/DT Comp spokes
Low level bontrager post
Super old salsa stem

I'm thinking cockpit and wheels should be the focus as all the old XTR stuff was brand new, works well and is actually reasonable light. And maybe lighter brake calipers?

Oooh, I just remembered I've got a pair of Easton Sagitta wheels that are brand new in my garage.

Not the world's lightest, but still sub 2,000g...

They were for a project, but I never got around to building it up.

never...and i mean never under estimate the power of ghetto-ness:thumb:
Ghetto did me proud last season. I started racing cross a couple weeks into the season with zero training, hadn't ridden any kind of bike in at least 3 months because we were remodelling our kitchen all summer, on my ghetto fab freebie commuter/cross bike and some how managed to do pretty decent.

This season I have to upgrade to a respectable class though so I feel the need to make sure my bike is a touch more appropriately outfitted.

They must be, there are tons out there.
Any alum. tubular wheels you would unload on the cheap? I need one more set of cross wheels (of course I probably need another set after this one...you know how it goes :))

You can request a Chris King disc hub to be built with a different axle spacing for road. I bet DT and some of the other high end hub manufacturers will do the same.

As for rims, Open Pro's.

My new 404 Pave rims are here (they replace the 303/404 I broke last year). Supposed to be sexier and tougher. I'm going to try and build them tonight, will post pics.

You make it sound like your wheels explode including hubs and only dust and good memories are left. No rebuilds?

If you respace the disc hub to 130 (which is possible) you will not be able to use the disc brake mounts..

You could build Kinlin's on Ultegra hubs with Revolution spokes for under $250. That's absolutely the way to go, IMO.

No, sorry, nothing in alloy. At least, not anymore. I had some Eastons, but they went bye-bye quite a while back.

The new 404s are a rebuild....you can never have too many wheels/tires for cross! Luckily my wife recognizes my "need" for more wheels

I received both rims last night, but I only have the spokes to build up the rear right now.

Kinda of a before and after. The new wheel used to look just like the wheel on the right (even had that tire on it).

I still don't know why you didn't go for the new 303 instead...

It is a good point. I would think that is a custom frame issue to fit it correctly.

However, I bet a Lemond is using mountain bike spacing...

because the 404 is hooooooooooot! When I break my other set I'll ask for 303s instead :) Then I'll have a set of each!

BTW, do you think the dimples will help cut through the mud? :p

No, but it gives the mud a good holding on point to pack up extra heavy though.
