Hey guys-

I'm heading to Whiteface this weekend and need some travel advice. On Friday, I'll be stopping in Burlington to have lunch with some friends, then I'm heading from there to my hotel in Lake Placid (I'll head to the mountain Saturday morning).

What's the best route from Burlington to Lake Placid? Should I just take that Burlington/Fort Kent Ferry, or should I drive to Grand Isle or Charlotte for a shorter boat ride (and a more frequent schedule of departures)? Alternatively, should I just drive farther down Rt. 7 through Chimney Point/Port Henry and skip the ferry thing all together?

Thanks,

John

I live in Burlington, and have been to whiteface half a dozen times. Ive never bothered taking the ferry across, as the drive is around 1.5 hours. For what its worth the ferry will cut off some time but it also costs $ and also is a scheduling hassle.

I would recommend that you take the ferry John. It does cost $16 for one way but it is a nice experience and you only have to drive 30 minutes for your whole trip.

I will be heading over Friday to walk the course and take some pics if anyone is riding and then coming home to pick up the wife. Let me know when you are heading over there or swing by for a few.

Shoot me a PM

The ferry worked for us. Plus they serve beer on the short trip, so a couple of those made it seem much faster. It's nice to get out of the car for a while. Not sure the cost of gas would be worth it if you went around, but YMMV.

You will have to drive down to the champlain bridge and come all the way back up 87 to connect to everything else. Plus you have to drive down 7 which is always a pain in the ass for most f the day.

If you are already in Burlington, just go right to the waterfront, get on the ferry and relax for an hour. Then to get to Whiteface from the ferry is literally 3 roads and a 30 min drive.

Plus the beer on the ferry is always a selling point or break into your stash in the cooler and enjoy.

Growing up in Lake Placid and having to go to the Burlington area all the time I have done that drive waaay too many times. There are several ways and all of them take pretty much the same ammount of time. Lately I take the Grand Isle ferry most of the time. If you take the Burlington Fort Kent one and miss the scheduled departure then you can wait for a LONG time. (Easier to miss the ferry going east from NY than it is from Burlington side) The Grand Isle ferry does have much more frequent departures during the day. If you are on time to take the ferry right out of Burlington then I would do that, its easy and the views are great on a clear day.

The bridge is pretty easy as well but unless you know the route well or have a GPS some of the turns can be a bit confusing and Ive seen pleny of people get lost. No matter which way you go count on it taking about 2 hrs.
