I'm shopping for a new set of wheels, a long travel freeride type of bike. Since mail order is sketchy when it comes to fitting a bike and all the dimensions look the same I am looking for a decent shop that actually STOCKS a SX Trail/Stinky/Bullit/Uzzi etc style bike (but not limited to those specific bikes) that I can put my butt on. I am in Lorton but don't mind driving as long there is actually something to ride.
Any suggestions?
thanks,
Gordo

Check out village skis and bikes in Woodbridge, Jake VSBjake on here runs the shop and has an sx trail you can check out, i think it is a medium. As for shops that stock them...good luck there are none anywhere near here.

Thanks, is it a shop bike or Jake's personal ride?

Germantown seems to not do long travel bikes anymore, but I thought there was a shop in Richmond that sold Rocky Mountains but I've forgotten the the name. Anyone know?

i'm a fan of SpokesEtc in Belleview, good service, and the manager is gravity orientated. They don't stock DH stuff specifically, but they i did have a sx trail on the floor. I bought my Session 88 from them.

I think DH/gravity specific shops are hard to come by these days. Due to the crappy economy, and typical demographic of neighborhood cyclists, more margins are made on lower to mid-end bikes (specifically hybrids and road/urban bikes)

Thanks, looks like a bit of a drive, but I will give them a call. I notice they have a couple closer stores like Alexandria - ever been in there?

I hear you about the dearth of shops...not like there were many to start with. But you would think with the way DHers break things on our bikes, we would be a ready made market. :D

The Richmond Rocky dealer is Rowletts at the corner of Staples Mill and Broad Street behind the gas station.

I haven't been in there in about a year since I moved back up to NOVA, but last time I was in there, they didn't have much in the way of big bikes anymore. A Giant Faith, A rocky Mountain Switch, and an RMX frame that had been on the wall forever. I'd call there to see what they've got before the drive. Fred is the owner/manager, and James is one of their mechanics who has been there something like 30 years. I worked for Goodly Bikes in Richmond a few years ago, and when I was there he had a few of the bigger GT's and Jamis'.

And if you are up for a little drive, probably the best place to go would be Shenandoah Bicycle Company in Harrisonburg. Call them to see what they have in stock, but they should have a few of the longer travel Trek/Gary Fisher bikes, and possibly a few others.

BAXTER on here works there, if you go there, talk to him (Jason) Tell him BigMike sent ya

(He's a mechanic, not a salesman, but he'll let you know whats up)

Thanks. We actually head for the Harrisonburg/Staunton area every so often for various events (like the Black Friar's Playhouse).
