What's the scoop on the type of steel used on this frame? The price tag listed on mtbr.com leads one to think it might be higher end steel tubing - anyone got the scoop.

If not anything fairly high end - the listed price over on mtbr.com seems a tad steep to me.

I think this is the bike I rode at the Interbike dirt demo last week.
Oh. Em. Gee.

Rarely do I actually ride a bike at dirt demo that I like better than my own bike. I bought a Spot Longboard 29-er last year based on the toptube length and the fact that it felt so good at dirt demo a couple years ago. At 5'5, I had not found a 29-er that fit me any better.

Till now.

Canfield has created a 29-er with a short enough toptube, but no toe overlap. Additionally it must have a shorter chain-stay or something, because it accelerates like a 26-in wheeled bike. I was in awe. And sad at the same time. Because that Spot I own has my last name stamped into the bottom bracket. I thought I'd never find such a great bike. Sigh.

Thanks, Chris Canfield.
Sigh.
Thanks.

The chainstay length on the Canfield is a full inch shorter than your Spot Longboard - hence the joy in riding the Canfield.

If it was the one with the Easton Stuff and Manitou fork then yes it was the same bike. All the Canfield bikes had Fox forks.
That is my setup.
Glad to hear that you liked the way they ride.

I am embarrassed to say I didn't notice any of the components except for the Shimano shifters... because I wished it were SRAM. I was too busy being impressed by the ride quality and bike fit.

Chris will know which one it was. In one of those Interbike you-never-know-who-you're-gonna-see moments, my pedals were just installed when Josh Bender rolled up to talk to Chris and jumped on the bike to see how it would fit him. A moment later, at Chris's suggestion that I kick Josh Bender off my bike, I got to say, "Yo, Bender, off my bike." Bender looked at me, as if to say, "Do I know you?" and that's when I slapped my gloves together and took a wrestling ready stance and challenged him to scrap for it. Then he laughed and ask who I was.

Um... no one really. I just do oddball stuff.

Anyway, the bike had Shimano components, it was brown-ish in color, and felt great.

The brown ones where smalls
The gray ones where med's and the black ones are LG's
But that's a cool story.
