This probably isn't the place to post this but not too many people use chainguides on the XC forum.

I'm doing a 12 hour race this weekend and the closest thing I've got to an XC bike is my Banshee Rampant (only bike under 30 lbs I own). It won't take a FD and I've got an e13 LG1 guide on it but my current ring is too big for this race. Instead of buying a 32t SS ring I figured I'd use a 32t Shimano XT ring I've got in the parts bin. Is it a bad idea to use a ramped ring up front with a guide?

Not a problem.

You'll be fine running a ramped single chainring with a guide.
You may have more of an issue if you chose not to run a guide as the chain may want to pop off the ring as opposed to something without ramps or pins.

make sure the ring fits your cranks sooner than the night before the race. I recently put my diablous cranks fof my DH bike onto my enduro for use as my DH bike (the DH bike is broken) and went to switch the rings off my hones to the diablous. Higher end shimano rings are flared on both the left and right side of the ring. The shimano xt ring off my hone did not fit on my diablous cranks. The tabs on shimano cranks are narrower than the diablous cranks. The shelf on the crankarm tabs run along a narrower diameter than the diablous cranks. Basicly the shimano xt ring did not fit on my diablous cranks unless i was going to seriously grind it down or grind the diablous tabs down. I'm not grinding the diablous tabs so I needed to find a different ring. I ended up using an whicked cheap shimano that was stamped steel. I had to grind the mounting hole area on the chainring down a bit to fit the wider diameter shelf that is on the diablous cranks. The stamped steel ring wasn't flared on both sides like the better aluminum rings from shimano so it would sit flush against the crankarm tabs.
